ABS Failure

   Am wondering if any members have any knowledge of warning icons popping up on the above model , relating to ABS failure , friend has had such a problem and after a visit to Dick Lovett dealership was told that it was a system (ABS) failure and X megabucks to put right ,comment was also passed that it was a frequent  problem with that model . Has anyone else experienced this problem ? Another point relating to the above ,the present routine of servicing which has been in use for a number of years ,no more green lights just a series of random visits to the main dealership as and when the car tells the driver ,a friendly contact I have in the  local dealership described it as "a licence to print money" , I dont have a problem with this myself , my 1994 540i -130,000 plus miles ,just keeps soldiering on munching up the miles ,9 years ownership , never let me down - touch wood ! ! Did have a blip last year , main air feed pipe from filter housing disintegrated whilst on hols in yorks dales ,excellent backup from BMW EMERGENCY ,car recoverd to Bateman, BMW at Grange over Sands, had a shiny new 520d from AVIS for 4 days, very nice , but glad to have my own back . There we are, all done for now,Dave.

	our 118d has also had a new module installed. it knocked out the ABS and traction control. Bowker Blackburn had the car for the day and sorted it out under BMW warranty which was due to expire 8 days later! the module is directly linked to the hydroulics and the cost of the part is well over a grand. this is a near 2 grand job with BMW labour Rates included and equates to around 20-30% of the cars value to fix. I was told they replace lots of these! in my opinion this is another nail in the coffin for modern cars and their dependance on complex electronic systems.

	And just wait until DSC becomes a mandatory fitting at the end of next year! If the ABS/ASC module of my Z3 were to die, I would just use a PC to disable it, and join up the brake pipes directly. Modern cars are too dependent upon unneccessary and over-complex electronic systems, which will eventually cost the user a lot of money. For example, does electric power steering do anything which a simple hydraulic system does not? (Apart, thatis, from being able to dull its respnse to suit those who should not be trusted with decent steering!)

	Hi, what reg is the car? I have a 58 reg and knowing that this niggle with the ABS could happen to me is quite worrying with BMW prices

	mines a 56 plate and the job was carried out around 6months ago. i dont know if the new part is a direct replacement or a technical upgradede part.

	Units can be repaired - your own or exchange worst case at fraction of cost of a new one

	thats reassuring neil. why dont bmw repair them? i'm guessing that they cant guarantee a repair but would guarantee a new part.

	Look at : ecu-testing.com They repair just about any vehicle electronic system.

	I know it's a while since the last post on this topic. For anyone worried about this on their 1 series BMW now have a repair kit at a far more realistic price. When the fault first occured they were replacing the complete unit, now it is just the hydraulic part so you also save on the labour for programming the car

	Indeed, the part is about 200 quid and is an hour's work to fit. BMW know it's an issue and even though the oldest cars are now 8 years old, they're being realistic. Same on the E90 3 Series btw.
