The E36 compact, is in my opinion, one of the ugliest BMW's ever. It's like an Alsacian with a chopped tail.
The Escort MK2 is a beautiful car, but "marrying" it with a chassis derived from a E30 isn't a complete nonsense.
I wouldn't bother to go through all this work, but it will be interesting to see what will happen next...

Reading the article he want to upgrade to engine and the E36 chassis is a good donor and the compact back end is same as an E30 - got to admit quite like the compact and the Mk2

Of the opinion if he wants to do it and can do it then good luck - better handling and faster retro car....but guess the Escort boys have something stronger to say.....guess he didnt like the Compact look eitherLOL

I hate to be picky boys but it's a MkI Escort and IMO it's a total waste of such a classic as a MkI Escort.

Although  I do have to take my hat off to the lad that's undertaking this mammoth task, it wouldn't be easy and from what I've seen he's making a very professional job of it

to be fair the shell of the Mk2 dd not look too clever and to buy the correct Escort mechanical parts now is getting silly and bet that shell had no decent history - to each their own

In very 'basic' terms, the difference between Mk 1/2 escort and E30/E36 compact is in the rear suspension design,Ford used a live axle on cart springs and BMW opted for independant rear end using trailing arms,so this guy has the right idea!

The way he is going about it,and the reasons for doing it are questionable,IMO,poorly carried out projects of this kind are ideal ammunition for the 'tree-huggers' who are bent on stopping any kind of car modification.

Within the UK,we have a long tradition of car nuts modifying and building 'specials',it does appear as if forthcoming EU regulations are set to limit or even remove this pleasurable tinkering.
