Submitted my application / order on Monday and it arrived in yesterday's post, so they obviously process orders promptly.

I ordered mine on Saturday, and got a nice polite reply on Monday. Not totally surprisingly my 1988 E30 does not qualify for a sticker. Can't say I'm shocked seeing as the V5 is totally blank on emissions info etc.

So for my trip to Germany in June, my plan is to a) hope I don't need to go into any zones where the sticker is needed, b) if I do, hope no-one notices, c) hope the police take pity on a car that is only 2 years off qualifying for German Historic Car criteria, d) pay the fine, it is way less than my petrol bill anyway

if you check the RAC web site for traveling abroad at the bottom they have a link to how to buy the sticker and regulations, at the moment there are only a couple of city where it is needed, when i went to cologne it is needed. Smile

Will cars need to display the sticker even if one is just passing through Germany, or not entering a low-emissions zone?

You only need it entering low emission zones.

I visit family 2 or 3 times a year in Germany, This has been out for more than the last 1-2 years. I have never bothered with this but it might be some thing to consider,

Has any member with a car that conforms to the definition of 'Historic Vehicle' (over 30 years old and worthy of preservation) have experience of driving into an Environmental Zone?

As far as I understand you don't get a sticker but are allowed to enter, how is that policed? I'd have thought it would make more sense to issue a green sticker if you're allowed in (or some other colour like Blue) so it would be obvious that you were exempt and allowed in.

We went to Munich, we tried to get a sticker for an E30 "F" reg is it 86/87. There was no record of the car as it was an Alpina. Anyway the general view was that it was extremely unlikely that the local Munich Police would be very interested in a UK car which was a classic, other than admiring it. A number of us did get the green disc but no one was stopped and we drove and parked at BMW Welt, no problem.

I've been reading up on my German law ready for my trip to Germany next week. There is a list of vehicles that are excluded from the sticker ruling - disabled vehicles, military vehicles etc. Last in the list are Oldtimers, which in Germany get registrations with a H suffix (Historic Vehicle) following a tough inspection on originality and condition by the TUV. So this status is very visible to the police.

Also excluded are Oldtimers registered in other EU member states, if they meet equivalent requirements to the German ones. How we can show that with a UK registration beats me. I'm taking a copy of my V5 and the German law and then be prepared to BS my way through the conversation, and if all fails smile sweetly and pay up. Remember being even slightly abusive or disrespectful to a German Police Officer is a serious offence in it's own right and is often enforced

Just returned from Germany in my E39 - it's fourth visit in five years.

Never been aware of this, nor have I noticed and of these stickers on other cars.

It's a bit like the French breathalyser requirement - some say you do, some say you don't.

I was in Germany last week with the E30. Most cars do have the stickers.
My Garmin navigator seems to know where the zones are, and offered the choice of navigating around them. I choose not to, and had no problems. It needs a police officer to physically catch you in the zone, so you are unlikely to get caught unless you are regularly there. But if you do, EUR40 fine.

ps nice picture on the Karousel, very jealous !

We recently went to Germany - the Mosel area - displaying our nice green emissions sticker, but did not see any sign of restricted areas during our jouney.  Has anyone seen such restricted zones, or signs that the politzei are enforcing them?

I didn't see any roadsigns on my trip last week, but may have missed them. My GPS warned me that I was driving through environmental zones in Mannheim, Munich and Heidelberg. As I have no sticker, and did not get stopped, there is not that much enforcement.
