Well, the last month of ownership hasn't been all plain sailing. Had the dash light up like a Christmas tree and the loss of the speedo resulting in that stomach reaching feeling of uber expense😱
Was it the dreaded SMG? Or the vanos? Luckily I have an excellent Indy who diagnosed a worn n/s drive shaft that jiggered abs sensor. A couple of hundred quid later and hey presto now good as new. Stu. |

Woes continue a bit with the car not starting on the turn of the key. Looks like a starter motor fault, looks quite common on these M's
Changed the keys round and it starts ok (for now). Stu. |

If it starts with your spare key but not with your main key how can it be the starter motor ? has the key failed ?

Your correct in your words, I was just trying to reduce the number of things it could be. I have used the car for 3 days now and I've had no issues with it not starting first turn of the key. Its still early days but it is pointing towards a key fault not the starter motor.

New starter motor purchased and will be fitted this Friday by my trusty mechanic. Let's hope this fettles the issue for good. I do dislike intermittent faults.

Hi Steve, it would seem that way. Real issue was the solenoid not engaging. Could have purchased just the solenoid and fitted to my original starter, but for that price it wasn't really economical to do that as the starter was original and would have failed at some point. Best result was to purchase new starter and eliminate any future issues. All is well so far.
