My 2500 has the original friction clutch and 5 blade fan. The temperature gauge tends towards the 3/4 mark unless road speed is towards 60mph on flat roads. At slower speeds/hills the temperature rises again to 3/4 gauge reading. The radiator looks to have been replaced previously therefore I am assuming the fan clutch isn't engaging correctly hence higher road speed is required to create sufficient airflow through the rad'. Has anyone fitted a later viscous clutch/fan arrangement to improve airflow ?. Is there ny method of testing the friction clutch without removing it ?. I'd prefer to keep everything original however BMW parts show the clutch as NLA so I'm struggling for ideas,
Thanks,
Robin

The best option is a later E28 water pump, fan pulley and the Behr type fan and coupling with it's 32mm nut. The older Holset coupling goes in and out of production but the last time I checked they were over £200.

Thanks Andrew. I think I'll have the friction clutch refurbished first to see if that improves cooling. I also note from the radiator part number that it's the 50 row type, not the 56, so there's another possible improvement. It also has the original diameter pulleys that were later changed to raise fan speed, so might also try that modification. I'm trying to keep it as close as possible to original spec'.

Robin

I'm sure you are already aware but do try the Walloth and Nesch web site in Germany, they often have seasonal special offers in place.

I recall when refreshing one of these motors a few years back that Barnie Halse was pretty clear - fit new radiator, pump, viscous fan, thermostat and new rubber hoses/clips and a good antifreeze!

Thanks Richard, good advice indeed. Unfortunately the budget is limited so I'll need to do the minimum to improve cooling, hopefully the fan clutch will work,
