As with the other comments here, very sorry to hear the pride and joy must go, I had a similar situation years back but when I was able to return did manage to come across an even better car - I hope will be the same for you...

I have been making some progress - finally pulled the window switches out of the E30 for dismantling and cleaning

Hi all
At the weekend I did some more work on my E46 & I know it's not winter, but I was looking at posting pics of my latest work within the next few days. What I was thinking of doing was moving all my posts of my work from this topic to a new one & adding the latest work to it if that is allowed & not breaking any forum posting rules.

Regards
Rich

it's been a little while since I did some work on my daily old banger LOL. This was something that was niggling me for some time so decided it was time to do something about it, so out with the tool box & got to work.
It was a bit worse than the pics may show up.

The rear qtr panel lights had algae around the outer edges which showed up more in the clear section than the red.

After the stripping out.

Bodywork was a bit dirty behind light units & so out with the soapy water & polish whilst the light units were out & in soapy water in a bowl to remove all the dirt, some of the dirt was a bit awkward to get to properly so used a long cable tie to get into the corners.

After drying the light units out & before refitting back together, I got a tube of clear silicone sealant to put a thin bead around the outer edges of all the light units due to the main rear lights had slightly come apart & was letting in some small amounts of moisture. After a few minutes for the sealant to dry it was time to refit everything.

Looks so much better now it's done & the sealant will hopefully stop the algae & moisture problem, time will tell if it's solved the problem as it has only been done since the beginning of june.

Nice job Rich.  Whilst someone driving by might not notice the problem, you know it's there, and it niggles!  I know exactly what you mean, and I'd want to do the same if mine got like that!

Will you be showing off your handiwork at Gaydon?

Thanks roger. Being in the motor trade for many years, I know what things to look for I guess. I don't have ocd if that's the right word for how I treat & look after my car but I have been the same with all my cars I have owned & they have all been my daily driver.

As far as showing it off at gaydon, to be honest I don't think anyone will notice the difference

Regards
Rich

That's not all of it.
just like jimmy cricket said "come here there's more"

I'll post more over the weekend.

I still haven't decided as yet if to keep posting my work in this section or to move it all into its own thread but I don't know what to do & I don't want to break the forum rules of double posting.

Regards rich

I said there was moreLOL

The following weekend after doing my rear lights job, it was out with the tools again. This time to sort out a slightly leaking n/s/r shock absorber. So I was on the phone to my local bmw dealer & eurocarparts to order the parts. I got Sach rear shocks from eurocarparts & other parts from bmw. I am trying to keep it original & genuine as much as possible.

I purchased all the parts to replace the top mounts, bump stops & guard tubes for n/s & o/s, because shocks should really be changed in pairs, so I thought whilst it was to be stripped out I'd replace all of it rather than probably have to do it later on.

After stripping down the n/s, I was left with this.

After seeing the state of the n/s & stripping it down. I am glad I was changing everything instead of what I thought was just to replace the shock absorber. After the n/s was back together I then moved onto the o/s.

This is what I found the o/s was like after stripping it down.

I only stripped the top mount down on the n/s as to see what order the new parts went for fitting together, but I would imagine the o/s would have been the same.

There is another job that I am in the middle of doing this weekend & will be posted in the next few days.

regards
rich

Hi Rob.
Sorry you couldn't view my pics in my posts. The problem I  have noticed is that in the member control panel, file manager it states that the upload limit is 3MB. If you then delete previous upload files to make room to enable more file uploading, you lose the pics in all your posts. This is something new I have learnt.
I resize them to 300 x 300 pixels so that I can post them because of the file size limit, I think there should be no limits as it does restrict postings.

Hi roger

Thanks for your comments regarding my work. I had to reload all the pics again into the file manager for them to show again in my posts.

Since the recent work on my old banger, i have done some more little jobs. I bought a new key fob button pad due to badly worn buttons. Now looking much better & refreshed.

When I removed the dash trim to replace the broken centre air vent due to my own fault, I also replaced 2 of the fixings due to being broke.

New dash fixings fitted in place & dash trim fitted.

Whilst the dash trim was off, I replaced the broken centre air vent. New one fitted & looking much better with the brighter control markings.

This is the broken unit & sun bleached markings, this is more noticeable with the red markings.

That's all folks for now.

regards
rich
