I seem to have a cracked housing on my water pump (2010 135i N55). Does anybody have any experience with this i.e. replacement parts?
According to Europarts the pump is £450 (VDO Siemen i believe) which seems a little excessive to me. Anybody know of any alternatives? i have seen one on ebay branded First Line for approx £100. Is this likely to do the job or be more trouble than its worth? I already have a fair bit in this car and would obviously prefer the cheaper option, but not if its going to be more hassle than its worth in the long run. Thanks in advance

Hi trwilde
You could try bmwmotormec. I bought a water pump from them for my E46 recently & found them to be very helpful, good prices & would use them again. They use realoem to match the parts correctly. Regards Rich |

£450 for a water pump - ridiculous! My commiserations.
This is the type of problem which the BMWCC should be taking up directly with BMWGB, in the interests of its members. I think your pump is an electric type, which is supposed to give a tiny improvment in mpg and emissions, but that is easily cancelled out when you have to buy a new one so soon at such an exorbitant price. Is a small electric motor really worth an extra £400 on the price? Dyson vacuum cleaners must be envious that BMW can get away with such open robbery. I would not be surprised if the water pump is coded to the ECU, for no better reason than to keep the after market supply to BMW and their dealers. These cars are not going to be the kind of thing one keeps for years, but will ditche quickly before this kind of problem rears its head. BMW seem to have lost thier old engineering integrity, and are ripping off customers without shame - and we allow the BMWGB chief space to expound in our magazine every month - he should be making apologies to all 1 Series owners, and offering a realistic explanation as to why these 'entry level' cars are so expensive to keep going. Maybe he should be made to read the BMWBaby.com forum every month, where the known common problems with the 1 Series make one's hair curl . . . Edited by Mike Fishwick - 08 Aug 2016 at 1:02pm |

Have you checked the price at your local BMW parts department ? Some parts can be horribly expensive, some are remarkably cheap with no apparent pattern or logic. Worth the cost of a phone call to find out, plus ask for a BMWCCGB discount.

It is not just the 1 series that have a problem with the Electric water pump, it happens on the N55 engine fitted to the E9X.
The water pump on my late 2010 E92 335i went 40 miles after collecting it from the dealer It was fixed under warranty, without that I was looking at a bill of over £600 to replace and fit |
