E60 M5 - Engine destroyed after clutch failure

Hi, any thoughts on the below. The car cut out earlier today, car will run but very rough and currently in limp mode so ended up getting brought home on a AA truck.

We have arranged for a recovery of your vehicle.Patrol found the following fault code/s:System : Engine control 1 - 1LX / Siemens MS S65 Status :2789 - Main catalytic converter conversion rate (bank 1). Error Message : Faulty. Sporadic error present. Status :278A - Main catalytic converter conversion rate (bank 2). Error Message : Faulty. Sporadic error present. Status :271A - Solenoid valve for camshaft displacement (bank 1), intake. Error Message : Faulty. Error present. Status :271C - Solenoid valve for camshaft displacement (bank 2), intake. Error Message : Faulty. Error present. Status :271D - Solenoid valve for camshaft displacement (bank 2), outlet. Error Message : Faulty. Sporadic error present. Try a search on the e60 section of m5board.com.   a ton of info on thete, and helpful people. Hope it isn't too expensive. ......

After the initial fault the car when running started to make a rattle from the rear of the engine ( gearbox bell housing).
I've had the car into a local specialist and he's saying that the bearing has seized/ failed. The clutch was the original one, the car is an October 05 car with 43k miles on it. The part that failed was an original bearing where it had a metal inner sleeve, I've been told that BMW know of a potential seizing/failure of this bearing and have since changed their design. I had over the last 100miles or so noticed it changing from 3rd to 2nd with a bit of a shunt, but I've heard many a M5 driver complain of this before, and a clutch change seems to solve this however I've never seen an engine fail.

Now here's the worrying bit:
The car cutting out/ throwing up a shopping list of codes was the engine oil being heavily contaminated with aluminium ( no copper). The VANOS system became unworkable as the system is clogged up with aluminium fragments.
With the gearbox split the crank now has around 8mm of movement on it, the clutch failure seems to have shifted the crank.
The next step is to split the block and see if it can be saved, the crank/ rod bearings/ oil cooler etc will all need replacing.

I just wanted to make sure no one else ends up in the same situation, if running an original clutch then it's definitely worth changing the release bearing.
I appreciate anyone's thoughts on this or if anyone has heard of this before.

may be cheaper to look for a used engine from a written off car ?

Yeh your probably right to be honest.
To be honest I was a little shocked to think that this kind of damage could be caused by this failure. The Indy specialist says he has only seen this once before on a early M6 with 30k miles on it, I've searched the Internet for days but can't seem to find anyone with similar issues.
Suppose we'll just see once the motors apart the extent of the damage and I'll just go from there.
