Putting the air filter directly on the inlet pipe will cause the engine to breathe warm air, which will reduce power, increase noise, and increase the risk of pre-ignition (pinking). In order to avoid this you would have to divide the filter from the rest of the engine bay - a task already performed by your air box.
Apart from that, thre are plenty of good reasons to get rid of a K&N filter, for apart from the glowing testimonials of the manufacturer, the original paper element does a far better job at filtering and protecting your engine. Some people like to think that a K&N filter increases the performance of their car a liittle, but when You question the amount of improvement, and how they are so sure of it, the 'improvement' usually turns out to be a feeling and nothng more. Proper lab tests of K&N filters state that when new, the K&N has a very slightly higher flow rate than the standard type, but when identically fouled, the original has a much higher flow rate. The '50,000 miles between cleaning' claim must be after the car was used in an operating theatre! K&N filters are just a fashionable noise-maker, which does nothing else well.
