Hi
I imported my BMW Z3 from South Africa and want to register it with the DVLA. They require that I submit a document indicating the date of manufacture of my car. They suggest that I get it from the manufacturer or a recognised authority, such as a car club. BMW customer service did not even reply to my online request. Does this club create documents like that? If not, does anybody know where I can get one?

We are piloting a scheme to supply these. Phone the office and talk to Lisa.

Probably not unless the Alpina manufacturing records have been transferred to the BMW archives.

In spite of their claims, BMW seem to have little interest in their history - perhaps they have forgotton the meaning of 'service!'

Did you contact BMW (SA) who would have received the car from BMW, and sold it as new?

I see I'm not getting the hang of posting on this forum  Ouch

Thank you NickDE Smile

Thank you for the suggestion Mike FishWick. I should have thought of that. I guess I wrongly assumed that BMW UK would want to help me and did not think any further.

I think there is zero chance Alpina records have been transferred to BMW archives .

Don't know if this will help?

  1. I assume you don't have the service book?
  2. When you lift the bonnet on the suspension turret to the left there is a label with the build date on it ~ the other turret has the paint colour
  3. If you put your VIN number into search on RealOEM.com website it will show car details including the build date

The RealOEM links the VIN with a reputable database so a printout maybe acceptable?
A photo of the label is also evidence, although weak but may help support the RealOEM printout?

You cannot send the VIN plate to DVLA, and they will not accept an owner's reading of the VIN code, which may have been copied from another car for cloning purposes. The important thing is the VIN stamped into the body

DVLA will probably not accept a date via an internet site , but you can get the same thing from any BMW dealer, which has the advantage of being an offical BMW document.  Just provide the last seven digits of the VIN, such as LE91381.

However, a UK dealer may not have access to data for a car sold through BMW(SA) but it is worth trying first.  In this case, an approach to the supplying dealer in SA, or the SA registration authorities would be the best answer to prove the pedigree of your car, which could otherwise have been stolen in SA and then imported to the UK.

The gold standard for this type of thing is the original bill of sale, and ideally a list of the subsequent owners, but again, the SA registration people may be able to help.

Thank you very much for this additional information. It might be useful when contacting BMW South Africa. I might be able to get the information I need from one of my former colleagues in BMW SA.

The employee at my local BMW dealer in Warwick showed absolutely no interest in trying to help me. He started telling me that he could not help me the moment I mentioned I need a document for the DVLA. He was not interested in hearing what information needs to be in the document.

Dealing with the South African registration authorities would be my absolute last choice. It is a nightmare dealing with them from overseas.

I have my original South African registration papers and police document stating that the car was not stolen. All I still need is one "official" document stating the date of manufacture  Smile

Not surprised local dealer showed no interest. People think they are dealing with BMW they are not its a franchise from BMW to the dealership whoever they are. I believe BMW UK Limited only own one dealership which is Park Lane and that is because it deals with special orders and shipment overseas after import to the UK .

You can order a certificate from The BMW Group Classic/Archiv in Munich, which will confirm the date of manufacture and is accepted by the DVLA. The cost is €50.

Drop Andreas an email, he speaks English too: Andreas.Harz@bmwgroup.com
Alternatively their telephone number is +49-89-382-68281.

BMW want £120 for a letter conforming the car's age.

I went through this with a November 1982 built E30 registered in March 1983.

Thanks but no thanks. I'll wait another year.
