My 1984 E30 odometer has stopped working.I have changed the damaged gears and can now operate the number wheels by moving the gears by hand and both the odometer and the trip-meter move, but the odometer does not work when replaced into the car and driven. The speedometer works so I am thinking that the step motor which drives the odometer is not working.  There is a printed circuit board on the unit which might operate the motor but I don't know how it works . Can anyone shed some light on this problem or are there any reliable repairers who can fix it?

As usual , a bit of patience was needed and , as the car has been standing idle for periods of time, I decided to look at the electrical connections between the speedometer and the printed circuit board of the instrument cluster. Plugging and un-plugging the speedometer unit from the cluster circuit board half a dozen times and doing the same to the multi-plugs which connect the cluster to the wiring form of the car has done the trick. It  now works.
