I have owned many E38s since my first in 2000, a 97 version. Since then a selection of them up to my 740i that I purchased about 3 years back. Its a Japanese import and it had 9,600 Kilometers on the clock when I bought it. I paid no tax on it when it had its first test by the DVLA inspectors, and I paid no road tax for the first year. I was a bit surprised until I looked at the emissions test provided by the DVLA.
CO2 reading was 0.000. The other reading was 1.
I thought it was just a fluke, but for the next MOT reading it was identical.
The following year when it went for test at about 28,000 KM, I asked the testers about this low CO2 reading. When it came back the reading was 0.0001. Note the extra decimal place!
The other was unchanged.
So I have to ask the question from other 740i cars (with the nominal 4.4 litre 8 cylinder engine).
What are your readings?
It now has 50K kilometres on the clock and returns 10.5 kilometres per litre on a 100 mile run on the M1. That's abouit 29 MPG for a 29.5 year old car.

My 4 other E38 cars have been the 728i 6 cylinder variety, often with CO2 readings of 128 or higher.
So if you own an E38 with the same engine as mine, could you please post your emission test results here for comparison please. It may just be a result of stricter emission controls in Japan, or they may all be similar. Would be interesting to know.
Cheers.Smile

Howard, I saw this post and was going to reply in May when MOT due but with COVID restriction my MOT date changed to October. My car is 2000 E38 740i sport (4.4 litre engine) 112081 miles on clock.

Fast idle test.
 Co2   =  0.004
 HC    =     3

Natural idle test.
Co2    = 0.006

I was also surprised how low the emissions are as the official co2 rating are  301 g/km.

So was I. When I owned a 728i the readings were so much higher. When I imported the car and had it tested for registration, it was classed the same as an electric car and I paid no tax for the first year. Back to normal now unfortunately
