    Posted: 01 Dec 2014 at 7:52pm
To mark my 20 years as a BMWCC Trackday Organiser I have decided to introduce a few changes for the 2015 season that will see us focus on our core value of appealing to the BMW owner that want to track his or her road car.

  • Road Legal Cars only at most events.
  • Club members and day members only at all events.
  • Reduced entry numbers at all events.
  • Limited 'additional driver' availability.
  • Invoicing for payment.
  • Recruitment from within wherever possible.
  • Re-intruducing the A/B session format at Cadwell Park (30 mins on, 30 mins off)
Thanks for reading,
Nick

All looks a good idea but for the top one - will some events not allow trailerd cars - the complication I can see is that now cars may not have a tax disk on display so may be tricky to identify - but agreed you dont want race cars/drivers taking too much space from the core carclub drivers -

Will support the whole year fully again - when you get to 25 years we can have a big party ;-)

I'm fine with trailered cars at any of the events.
Road cars can be modified for track use and still be road legal.
MOT document should be proof enough..any doubt about a cars credentials and we will do an online VOSA check

I'm also fine with pukka race cars at the bigger places like Donington and Silverstone.

Its the grey area inbetween road and race that I am concerned about.. the cars that were once road legal but are now SORN'd for whatever reason and rock up stripped out and shod with stickies.

Nick - many thanks for your ongoing work on these great events.

I hope you don't mind me asking what is unique about Cadwell (it's the only one I routinely attend) that drives the 30 min on, 30 min off format ?  In the past I have found the open pitlane arrangement one of the most appealing aspects of the events, so this change is intriguing.

Thanks in advance for responding.

Hello Matthew, sorry for the delayed reply.

Historically, our Cadwell event was always sessioned to include 3 groups rotating in 20 minute sessions.

I changed that to OPL when I took over this event around 6 years ago and tried to mirror our Croft Circuit event that had been running OPL successfully for a few seasons.

For several years now I have been promising to return to at least one sessioned event per season to satisfy demand from our members that prefer the group format.

So this one is it.

By reducing the total entry by around 10 or so I can run just 2 groups rather than the usual 3 and hopefully not disappoint the OPL lovers too much!

If it works, great.
If it doesn't we will return it to OPL in the future.

Thanks for reading.
Nick

Thanks Nick. Sessioned isnt for me so i will skip it. But i love cadwell and hope you will rotate the sessioned events to other venues which will give me a chamce to return.

As an aside, why would someone feel that sessioned is better ? I cant really work that out.

Anyway, all the best with it.

Always been a fan of OPL, as it allows for tweaks and maximum track time for those who wish to.

From previous experience, at an OPL, only 1/3 to 1/2 of attending cars are out at any one time.

Be very interested to see how it works on the day though, good luck Nick :)

All the other cars are OPL and they do work well but some people do overwork their cars at times...the idea of the sessions also in this case allows to run novice slots and also instructors etc and then the more experienced drivers are out at the same time so helps bring on the slower drivers and also allow the quicker cars not to be held up - pros and cons of both types hence why its worth offering both so caters for the different members and cars etc

this may pose a problem for me

my compact will be making an appearance this year ager a few hers locked away. and as I've not been on a track for a long time the safest place to give it a shake down and learn the car would be on one of your track days.

the problem is it is stripped and has a cage. i have no intention of racing but it will pretty much be a dedicated track day car but will be road legal with insurance, MOT and tax.

it will also have a few stickers on it which plug my and a few friends business interests

Kos if it's road legal then you have no issues to worry about

Many of our race cars are road legal now as just easier

I know that you have spent some time getting this car sorted and sure you will enjoy the trackdays

Nicks concern relates to some of the smaller tracks where he does not want to alienate or put off the core members who don't have race licences they just want a good day out and sometimes when you get too many competition cars out there it can create issues

See you at Snetterton then

I'd be very interested in attending some track days in 2016. I've attended the ones that the IAM run (which are superb) and would be keen to attend well-run events.

I've no interest in attending events where drivers think they are racing (because they have to wear a crash helmet), getting my car taken out or showered with gravel by idiots.

What are the BMW CC ones like pls?

The BMW track days are the best ones for those not wanting to be surrounded by idiots in hot hatches. There is a much higher standard of careful driving than you will find with the majority of other operators.

Look for the days where only road cars are allowed.

The organiser(s) of the club track days don't tolerate the idiots that can spoil the day and if someone does attend they are spoken to as this is a day for everyone to enjoy and learn how to drive their car better as per the IAM

There will always be a mix of drivers cars and talents including current past race drivers who all respect the idea behind the days and will let you sit in with them offer advice and respect your position on track ...its invite only for overtaking.

There are also the novice days but if you are an IAM driver this may not be for you and at all the days there are instructors

I hope that helps or you can speak to Nick when you are ready to book

As a relative newcomer to the bmwcc trackdays I can vouch that the days are very well organised. You are taught to respect the people around you and if a faster car is behind you just let them past with consent and crack on with your own lap. Morning briefings set the tone for the day, these are firm but fair. The people who attend these days are great and there is always a smile and hello when walking up and down the pit lane.

As Cabrio states there are instructors on hand to help guide you, the instructors cater for all levels of experience and are a must IMO.

Your only real problem Ant Man is how many do you sign up to :)

I know Nick is on holiday at the moment, but does anyone know whether I can get a credit/refund for one of our group that can no longer make the event (car won't be ready in time)?

Hi I am sure he can sort that when he gets back as he should be able to resell the place and change it to another name

I suggest email him with the details or if you send the details to me I will pass it on so it can be dealt with if you want me to - other option is to carry it over as a credit for one of next years events my work out easier

Let me know if can help while he is away

Am happy with a credit for another day - as the driver will be doing at least Cadwell and/or Oulton again next year.

Thanks for the help.
