I currently own a 1999 V reg E36 323i Vert and a 2001 E39 540i. The E36 is what my accrued NCB is on and i have had to start a fresh for my 540i.
I'm toying with selling my E36 as I don't do massive miles and going to transfer my NCB onto the 540i next year. Was talking to a couple this year at a show who own a 1998 E36 Vert that get their car in a Classic limited mileage policy which would be great if i could insure either both together for a sensible price or get the Vert on a Classic policy. So, what age/year qualifies for a Classic Policy?? Kind regards Lee |

Hi lee
I am a bit confused on what is classed as a classic, as I have a 1999 s reg e46 323i of which is my daily driver. I spoke to a guy from footman James at a car show last year & was told they could insure my car on a classic car policy but I can't recall what the yearly limited mileage was if any. Regards Rich |

Cheers for reply Rich. The Classic policies ive had in the past are normally either 1500 or 3000 miles. One Classic policy i had my Discovery on was unlimitted miles so probably goes on value of insured vehicle and a few other details that each insurance chooses?? My verts use doesn't currently warrant the premium i pay but a 3000k mile low cost Classic 2nd car insurance means its feasible to keep.

I got turned down for classic insurance on my 2000 E46, even if I run it as a fifth car/weekend only/3000 miles. On the basis that it is still too new. But that was just one company.
I don't think there is a strict definition of age, each insurer can decide for themselves. Phone a few and see what you can find. Expect usage limitations on miles, storage, type of driving etc though.

If the vehicle is garaged and doing less than 3000 miles a year I am sure you wont have a problem getting the vehicle on a classic policy.
You would however struggle if the vehicle was your only car.

As far as I'm aware, it's entirely dependent on the insurance company and the car.
My 2001 E39 is insured as a classic. 7k mileage limit, parked on the road and is my only car. You don't accrue NCB on a classic policy, however, and, after 2 years of not having a full policy, you lose any NCB you may have built up. My plan is to insure it as a classic for 2 years, and then get a normal policy for a year, allowing me to keep my bonus (assuming nothing untoward happens, of course). My '72 Mini had no mileage restrictions. |
