Hi Matt
The problem could be the housing that the ignition barrel fits into or the ignition switch has broken/worn or it could be the grub screw has come loose & fell out. If you look on www.realoem.com & type in the last 7 digits of your chassis number then the steering section it should show a breakdown of parts to help identify the part you may need to fix the problem.

Hope this helps

Have you got another key? if yes does it do it with both?
The key blades can wear quite a bit at the tip end, they become tapered!!

You need to get this sorted before the barrel spins all the time. As you need to be able to turn it to position 1 to be able to remove the barrel from he housing. Position 1 cannot be located once the barrel constantly spinning !!!

If I were you I would order a replacement barrel asap to your vin number at BMW dealer, they are not that expensive. It will however be expensive to sort this out once it is spinning.
