Hi all, I've got a problem turning in when warmed up, I get this noise:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5howi_V0dk

Any ideas, this started after I've fitted the refurbished 19" alloys, new tyres and 4 wheel alignment, standard factory set up, EDC:

1. Rubbing on wheel arch liner?
2. Wheel bearing?
3. Diff so perhaps needs the diff friction modifier fluid as with the E46 M3 common diff clutch noise?
4. Power steering pump/belt?
5. Something else?

Garage says it is not rubbing the wheel arch liner after they straightened up the oil cooler vent cover. I can't seem to recreate this turning right, nor without a rear passenger, just turning left.

Not the chestnut: make 3 right turns ...please LOL

Thanks for any help

The dealers master technician confirmed it was the diff making the noise so drained and refilled the diff with the friction modifier type (3x 500ml bottles at £33 + VAT each).

The car still makes the noise but it can take a few 100 miles to soak/coat the surfaces. I'll post back at +1k miles.

Thanks All Again.

Hi John,
Very difficult to hear exactly the issue form the clip.  However, I can share my experience from what you have describe.

Having removed the rear wheels on my e46 m3 to check the brakes, I encountered a similar issue.  Why it should be evident having removed the wheels I don't know, but I encountered a scrapping / rubbing sound, similar to what you are experiencing.  I initially thought it was something (a small stone) trapped between the dust guard and brake disc.  After removing the wheels numerous times, taking the car for a drive, tight lock circles, clockwise then anticlockwise, the noise appeared to subside.  Until one day under hard acceleration the noise reappeared far louder and more disconcerting, so much so that I pulled over to investigate.  In the end and having done some research and posing the question similar to yourself, I decided to replace the diff oil (obtained from BMW main dealer with the additive already added ).
Hey presto the noise disappeared.

As you say, this apparently is a common issue with the e46, I'm not sure about the e92.
Replacement diff oil at £100 isn't a cheap test!!

Anyway hope this helps and you get it resolved ;)

Thanks for the help Paul.

I've tried swapping things around and it doesn't occur from cold nor with 18s on the car, also tried without liners too, so not a rubbing issue now confirmed, it's looking like the diff or a bearing issue. The clip is almost full left lock, not quite.

The dealer now wants a £160 diagnostic, to probably show nothing, then investigate further.

TBH I only got the M3 last November so not 100% when it was done last, in fact it was from a Indy (coincidentally, Knightsbridge in Barrow so near you) with full SH so they may have refilled with the wrong grade if at all, it has 58K on clock now. I did change the air and cabin filters when I bought the M3 they both seems quite bad, so maybe get a full engine oil and filter change too while it is there.
But thank you again Andy that's reassuring me it is likely the issue, although I can't get this to happen turning right nor when cold.

For the record aware BMW released this:

Quote SUBJECT
Grinding Noise from the Differential during Slow Cornering
MODEL
E46 M3 from start of production
E60 M5 from start of production
 E63, E64 M6 from start of production
 E90, E92 and E93 M3 from start of production
SITUATION
A grinding noise may be heard coming from the differential during slow cornering.
This noise is best heard during tight cornering situations.
For example : while parallel parking, driving in a tight circle, etc.
CAUSE
When the rear wheel speed differential varies during tight cornering, a slip stick effect is created on the lining and steel discs incorporated in the differential locking clutch, causing the grinding noise.
This noise typically goes away as the locking clutch discs in the differential are broken in.
The break-in time varies depending on driving habits.
For example : tighter cornering (working the locking clutch) means that it takes less time to break in the locking clutch discs.
CORRECTION
If a complaint is verified as described above on the E46 M3; E60 M5; E63 and E64 M6; or on the E90, E92 and E93 M3 vehicles, the differential oil should be replaced with a specially formulated differential oil, BMW part number 83 22 2 282 583.
Road test the vehicle.
With the vehicle at operating temperature
Drive in tight circles (20 circles in each direction), allowing the special oil to coat the locking clutch discs.
The grinding noise will decrease when the locking clutch discs are sufficiently coated. Some slight noises may still be heard after driving in tight circles. Its necessary to drive the vehicle up to 600 miles before all noises are eliminated as stated by the manufacturer.
Note: Vehicles that have had the differential oil converted to this special oil should continue to use this oil whenever a service requiring the differential oil replacement is indicated.

Reading around there are quite a few with it and compare the noise to similar to a tyre rubbing, The indy mechanics I normally use couldn't advise later this afternoon and were scratching their heads, so looks like it will have to go to the dealers, I've sent the link for the video to the Service department and they said that they will pass it on to their master technician.

Fingers crossed. I'lll post back up once it's been diagnosed and fix attempted.

Compared to a new wheel bearing kit/steering pump/diff replacement the £100+ oil change does seem cheap though and even if it doesn't cure it will be a piece of mind it has then been changed correctly.

Sounds like wheel bearing. Do you get vibrations on clutch pedal? Does it grumble when stationary with foot slightly depressing clutch? Could easily be clutch?

Sorry I didn't mention it's a DCT model, so no clutch pedal. It only does this turning in quite tight and moving.

I only began to notice it going up the ramps a few times on the multi storey where I park for work, it's left turns all the way to my spot.

After +700 miles the diff noise has gone, possibly due to the warm weather perhaps heating up earlier, but no noise now. Again if this reappears later this autumn I'll post back again, but fixed for good hopefully.
