in 2015 the wife said could not get the car in gear, was only 100 yards away, so got under and put into n and pushed home, the car stayed in the garage until this week. the cable for the auto-box is nla , you can get one from china for £5 , but you have to order 1000. even breakers did not have one. the car needs major paint work (re-spray ) so time to get the socket set out . the auto cable failed due to a seized selector bar . removed faulty cable, cut of ends and drilled 2mm hole down into each fitting. found a motor bike company that makes wire brake cables ,so had one made 2mm 1mtr long (just in case ) cut cable to right size , and silver soldered 2" at each end, soldered into ends once wire was in outer case, fitter and works . can now drive car in and out which is good as all being taken apart for all the prep work before i do the spray job

have spent the last week taking off panels . have had the care since 2000 and speed-o now reads 102000, so was time for major work , new brake pipes and hoses , get rid of rust ( mig and grind ) , new headlining ,all suspension bushes , shocks and springs , front seats re-cover , computer pix repair , and full re-spray . should be ready for a car show on isle of wight in 2018 , so will give me over a year . saw a chap in us a take a e31 alpina to bits ,as i have plenty of time on my hands now , thought would do the same . as the wife says if the weather is not calm for flying my rc planes/quads ( fpv ) it will give me something to do

so now that the front , wings, doors, skirts, and rear bumper are all off ( sun roof to come out later ) have the car jacked up. so that the underside can be re-painted. parts have started to turn up from china, all my plastic panel clips, rivets , rubber mounts. so many rusted bolts and screws , all being changed to stainless steel. all the inside of metal panels have been sprayed in protective paint after any rust removed and mig infill done. one wing in primer, have used halfords rattle can , as the paint goes on nice and light rub down with 400 grit ready for spray gun of base coat ( this will be done in july/aug when its hotter).so far parts turned up each day, should be the same next week as well

I don't have an '8' but it sounds like you're embarking on a great restoration job. Keep up the good work!
Maybe if you have time, posting a few pictures would be good... |

Hi sweets
Sounds like you have got a job on your hands there, especially if you haven't done anything like a strip down before. I'd be taking photos & labelling things up as I went along if I did something like that to ensure things went back where & how they were supposed to. I think as this has gone off topic maybe it should be moved / renamed to suit the topic that is now being discussed. Keep up the good work & would also like to see progress photos. Regards Rich |

Agreed, this sounds like an interesting project in progress. How about a write-up for the Straight Six ?
