There are a far number of ALPINA D3 models on the market at the moment, cars around 15 years plus old. The price has dropped and therefore they look like a bit of a bargain. The D3 was introduced at a time when the UK government was encouraging people to buy Derv vehicles and they sold in larger number than almost any other ALPINA model.
Now we see many "new" owners have not done their homework, the find that some dealers don't recognise their car or understand it, some insurers don't ether. Parts if ALPINA specific are more expensive and you can't get them via cheap sources. How many times have I seen, oh I bought an ALPINA but BMW want a fortune for a replacement Supercharger (B5,6,7) about 4500 plus fitting and so on and so forth. If you can get warranty I would advise any owner takes it, if you cannot understand the risk against reward of non standard BMW performance vehicles. Seek advice from owners. |

Always liked Alpina, but the insurance & warranty on them seemed to be about twice the cost of my M insurance (due to desirability & cost of replacement parts I guess).
That's why I ended up with an e34 M5 instead of a e34 B10 Bi-Turbo.

Yes, if anyone is thinking of buying an ALPINA new or used they need to do their homework. I have never found anyone who has been disappointed with the car performance, handling or comfort. However, depending upon the model one owns they can be fairly expensive to run. The older vehicles are fairly rare in numbers built for the UK. The cars which Sytner converted and those before them need careful investigation to prove authenticity. The newer cars, especially those with superchargers so E65/66, E60 and so on the B5, B5S, B6, B7 really need to be bought with warranty and extended warranty, many have lots of non standard BMW parts and a supercharger will cost you 5K plus fitting. The biggest problem is that generally and even with dealership people do not know what they are or understand why they even exist. It is a narrow field of owners that embrace them and understand the costs.
Cheapest buy D3 turbo or bi turbo age depending. Most expensive new B7. Edited by Norrie - 15 Mar 2019 at 4:41pm |
