Hi all

I have just brought a 2015 M5 and would like some advice on the most cost effective way of maintaining it to the required standard.

It has just over a year on the basic BMW warranty (just oil change in believe), so any further advice would be most welcome.

Thanks

Jim, you have a valuable car with expensive components. I would look at extending the BMW Warranty for peace of mind especially on major items. I have had over 20K worth of warranty work on my car over 6 years. You can use an independent BMW dealer as long as they fit original BMW parts. There are many good ones. If you have condition based servicing or a service plan with BMW that is another option.

There may be things you can do yourself if you have the skills, knowledge and facilities. I have none of those so follow the aforementioned route.

Jim, I am sure they are more valuable than any car. You might speak to Martyn Goodwin about Cotswold BMW he has a good relationship with them and I think is a M owner.

Sorry, but if I had a car which required £20k of work in such a period I would not have enough confidence to bother keeping it!

In addition to the mystique of the M logo, the cost of a BMW M service is inflated by the theory that all valve clearances need to be re-shimmed at every service.  If this were so, it would indicate a lot of worn valve seats!

From what one reads, and from personal experience on shimmed VW Golf GTi and BMW K100 motorcycle engines, once the initial bedding-in period is over - after 50,000 miles or so - only one or two valves need to be re-shimmed, and even then not by very much, particularly if they have been set to the maximum clearance.

Unless you have money to burn, have your car serviced by a good M specialist, who will not rip you off, while ignoring the Service Interval lights and changing the oil frequently.  Apart from valve clearances and throttle body idle adjustments (not a time-consuming job) there is not much on an M car which is different from any BMW with hydraulic tappets.

The only problem of doing this is that if you decide to sell, lots of potential M owners have swallowed the propaganda that a Full BMW Service History is essential on these 'so-special' engines that buying without such evidence of being over-charged is not advisable, and so will reduce the value of such a car.

Hi Mike
Many thanks for your advice, I have had similar feedback from other sources, but wanted to hear from real BMW owners with first had experience of these things.
The  BMW services are quite expensive (one  could say overpriced as you infur) so I will think caerfully before spending my "hard earned".
Thanks agIn JimA

Jim, there are a few things to consider.

1. Does the vehicle have full service history?
2. What are the most expensive parts which fail on this model?
3. What is your budget for running costs?
4. How many miles are you going to drive and how often are you going to use it?

Do not answer these here just ask yourself, get a good idea of what it costs to own and run this type of car.

Independent garages labour rates from around 60 to 80 pounds per hour, BMW main dealer 120 or so. However, I get discounted parts and labour rate from my main dealer. Do your home work and compare.

Hi JimA

I also have just acquired an F10 M5 and am considering extending the BMW warranty from early July.
If you hear of any good independent garages in Gloucestershire that can work on these M5s I would be grateful to hear from you please.
Have you any experience of dealing with Cotswold yet?
Thanks
In my opinion Victor Meldrew was an optimist

if you cant afford to service the car properly then it clearly isnt the car for you.

You cant run an M car on a budget depsite what Mr Fishwick bumps his gums at.

Find a local BMW specialist for your servicing if you must, also a warranty is essential on a modern M car stick to under 60k miles when renewal comes pay by direct debit payments stay the same.

The 20K warranty work is on a high performance vehicle, a supercharger fitted is around 5K on the B7. We are not talking about a run around motor but a very high performance car. 520 bhp and 700 Nm torque.

Like M Power cars if one cannot afford to pay the servicing and the warranty premiums then get something else.

If I recall correctly,I have seen a post recently posted in may by the same gentleman on this forum about catastrophic enguine failure & looking for help. I don’t think the gentleman has had the car very long & then for this to happen I really feel sorry for him, as he must be very gutted.

Rich, if someone buy a high performance car such as a M Power or ALPINA, Schnitzer then they need to do due diligence before getting one unless it was a gift.

Personally I would never buy one of these type of cars from anyone but a main dealer with 12 month BMW warranty and the ability to extend it on the basis that it has had full service using OEM parts.

We do not know all the circumstances but any vehicle under warranty which has suffered major failure would be cover except in cases of proven neglect, like no oil or using it for racing or excessive track days and being found out.

There is no cheap solution to ownership of such a vehicle, it is possible to save some money by finding a good indy specialist, but many are not authorised to carry our warranty work for that it would need to go back to the main dealer.

I know a person who has had 74,000 pounds worth of work under warranty on an ALPINA B5S, the Warranty co has now revoked his policy, but it demonstrates that even major engine failure of components could be covered.

I wish the chap Jim all the best of luck, but without knowing the full circumstances its not possible to comment further.

Hi Lads
Really appreciate the responses, they have genuinely helped me get sorted.
I had budgeted for costs of owning such a car,  but obviously not a replacement engine,  but things happen!!.
I will be keeping the  car long term so will make sure it is maintained correctly.
Thanks again and I no doubt will be picking your brains again in the future.

Hi Norrie / everyone

I had parked the car, no problems.
Went to drive it the next morning, started it up and there was a knocking sound coming from the top of the engine.
I thought this turbo had gone, so took it to a BMW Specialist garage who initially thought a petrol pump had gone, but flowing that being changed, the  noise was still there. To be honest thecold pump did seem faulty and was rattling the same when it was changed.
But following that, the noise was still there. Upon further investigation ie rocker covers  and sump off. We could see bits of metal in the sump, and following the oil pump coming off, it was clear that the filter also had metal bits in it.

Cannot see why it happened as I never even went over 90 mph in it, but there you go. Private sale had it nust over 3 month with 19k on the clock.

Have sourced another engine now, so hopefully will be back on the road v soos.

Kind regards
JimA

Did you go back to the original owner? Did it have full service history when you bought it? It seems strange unless it had potential issues when you bought it? I dont want to sound like a wise guy, but you see what I said what I did about where any why I get a car.

no worries Norrie,
I am  not upset by the comments, I asked for feedback and am happy people are willing to help.
As there was no warranty I made the call, so have to sort it now.
As I said I shall be keeping the car so will get it back to 100% condition, and  enjoy driving it, but learn from the 'school of hard knocks"

Kind regards

19k on the clock & the engine needs replacing. Are you not getting the original engine repaired due to the low mileage?. I just hope that the replacement engine is all ok,what ever the mileage it has done.
Good luck in getting the car back on the road.

Regards
Rich

My local dealer sold an AUC F10 M5 and it blew up the next day. These are not overly reliable cars, and have a history of major engine failures. Run one without a BMW warranty at your peril. I wouldn't.
