I'm new to the club but not new to owning a BMW. I've had my 645i now for about nine years and the time has come (as many of you will know), to replace the valve oil seals. Could someone who has had this done already recommend a mechanic in the Wessex region to carry out the job. Some idea of the price would be a help as well. I have read about the kit to replace the oil seals without removing the heads. Is this a good way of doing it? Many thanks for your help. Cheers Phil

I have no experience of the BMW V8, but are you sure that the problem is in the valve guide seals? These problems which 'everyone knows' are often caused by something else, and oil smoke when lifting off is not a definite sign of valve guide seals.

I would first check the crankcase breather system (particularly its solenoid valve) is not obstructed by sludge, and then use a vacuum guage to check that the crankcase is not pressurising.

These seals last for ages - my Golf TDi has almost covered 250,000 miles with no problems, and my Z3 130,000, but high crankcase pressure or the use of a 0-30 grade oil in an old engine can also give similar symptoms.
A Z3 is not just for Christmas - it's for life!

Hi Mike, thanks for your reply.

Driving around normally is no problem as no smoke is visible, its the long traffic light that will get me. Setting off in a cloud of smoke is a bit embarrassing to say the least. This has been an issue for a while now.

I've had the PCV valves changed, as they can sometimes be the cause of it. My usual mechanic who changed these said it pointed to the valve oil seals. Being a small garage he hadn't changed the V8's valve seals before and was naturally reluctant to take it on.

Its a question of finding someone who's done this a few times and is aware of the problems.

Thanks again for your comments

Just a quick note to finish off the tale of my 645ci’s valve seal problem. I came across a recommendation for PMP Cars in Nuneaton on a Piston Heads forum.
I contacted Martin there and arranged for a visit to change the valve oil seals. He and his team did the work in a short time and I’m happy to say that my exhaust has been completely clear since. The work was done about 2 months ago.
The cost of this? All in, the bill was £948. That included new seals, all gaskets and VAT.
I can only say it was a job well done. At last I can pull away from the lights and not leave a thick cloud of smoke behind…..brilliant

Glad to hear you've had a good result after spending a bit of dosh.
Thanks for letting the forum know the outcome.
Maybe see you at Gaydon, minus the cloud of smoke!?
