Hi all I’m in need of some serious help. I’ve just bought an e46 318i and all was good. I’m 18 and as my second car I. Over the moon however I’ve just had a massive problem.
Got in the car and pulled away fine in first had to reverse, went fine into reverse and then got stuck. Couldn’t get it out of reverse and had to have someone hold the clutch down while we pushed it back. It is now out of reverse but won’t go into any gears, when I make the movements to go into gear I can feel the notches but it slips out of where it should be Any and all help would be seriously appreciated. I knew buying an older car would have problems, I just need to learn how to fix them Thanks Joe

Is the problem still apparent when the engine is stopped? If not, then the problem is most likely due to clutch drag. The next step would then be to bleed the slave cylinder, which may require the cylinder to be removed and inverted to get the bleed nipple at the top end. If that does not cure the problem, clutch drag can be caused by the clutch/gearbox splines needing to be re-greased with the correct type of molybdenum grease. If the problem is still apparent when the engine is stopped, it could be a sign of problems in the gearbox selector rod detent plungers ('Shift pins' if you want to speak American!) or a problem in the gearchange linkage - you do not say if the gear lever has any free play. Good luck! |
