Hi,

I bought a new X5 last week and in the process I enquired if they know anyone had a E30 325i for sale.  Cutting story short, I made a deal with a BMW employee for his E30.  It had a ground up respray and servicing by BMW.  New parts etc.  Its mint but not concours.  140k on the clock.  1991 model year.

With that mileage, what do I need to look for?  The service modulator is not working but can be replaced for £250.00.  The seat needs repiping on one side which he said he will get done locally.  I'm so excited about this but just need opinions of what to look for.

regards

Richard

The service indicator often messes about on the E30, as can other dials in the instrument panel. Often it is down to the rechargeable batteries aging and leaking. They can be replaced for less than £250, and whilst the instrument cluster is out check for damage and dry solder joints.
Has the cambelt been done in the last 4 years ? If not, get it replaced.
Oil in the water or water in the oil is a problem in the 325i
Otherwise with an E30 it is all down to condition. Get a BMW independent to give it a good check over. Generally the E30 is a well built tough thing that is pretty easy for a good mechanic to repair and maintain.
They do rust. Yours is a post facelift with bodykit which hides the rust. Look carefully at the rear towing point, the sills particularly at the jacking points, the front wings and inner wings where they meet the sills, the front inner wings under the ABS unit and the washer bottle, and the front footwells.

Nick,

Thanks!

I'll ask those questions too!  It's had rear wheel arches and quarters replaced and a complete respray barr the underneath and engine bay!  I'll post pics once I have purchased the car.  Hopefully in the next 2 weeks I'll be driving with a smug on my face.Embarrassed

Hi Richard
Regards to rust areas on an E30, you may want to take a look at an E30 M3 restoration project that is posted on this forum, under m power e30 m3 number 2. It is a fantastic thread being posted & very well worth the read.
I look forward to seeing the photos in due course.

Regards
Rich

Hi,

I got a cancellation booking for MOT for the E30.  As there is a crisis over here in NI with the number of vehicles needing MOT.  Delays can be 8-10 weeks, but I got one for 11th July.

Who is best for classic insurance for 3000 miles roughly.

Not bought yet, as the owner is on holiday to the 3rd July.  So going to pick up the day after that more likely!

I read the thread on the M3 Evo restoration!  Very good indeed!

Was wondering if the LCD for the dash computer to the left of the radio can be replaced!  On the E30 I am going to buy seems to be blown!

regards

Good Morning, I appreciate you are in NI. For your insurance and people who actually understand what the vehicle you have and will place it correctly call 01635 874646 speak to Carlie Norwell or Mathew Minchin.

To answer you LCD question speak to Barry Sherward or Ross Ingram at BMR 01293 773 774

I am sure there are others just as good but this might help.

Norris, cheers for the information.

I am bit if a detail sort of person who likes to make things work.  The dash itself is in good condition except the black looks a little faded.  Is there any way to bring back the black to the dash!

regards

you might ask Neil McDonald on the E30 register about that and indeed the other questions. He is a technical expert. In terms of any cleaning and restoration you might try Dan Woods in the club who is an expert at concours and making old cars look like new.
