I have the emission icon suddenly appear on the dashboard. What should happen/I do??
I have looked in the handbook and there is no mention of what happens when it comes on.
Any information much appreciated. Thank you.

Just looked on a website and it means there is a fault with the ECU so I will have to book it in.

It means that the ECU has detected a fault - not that it is faulty itself!

A common cause is a split in the rubber bellows between the airflow sensor and throttle body, weakening the mixture and causing a reaction from the lambda probes.

Otherwise, a check of the fault memory may show another cause.  In either case the fault codes will have to be deleted by use of a code reader etc.

Don't panic!

Thanks Mike, I will get it checked out. As long as it is not anything too worrying.

Have just had the mobile BMW service man arrive and it was just a sticking valve on the exhaust sensor thing. It was free and must have momentarily stuck and given off a reading that brought up the icon.
He sprayed some carbon cleaner and then some WD 40 and replaced the cover and all is now well again.
Very easy fix when you know what you are doing.
Good job, thanks to BMW
