I have in my possession a 2005 Mini one petrol. Rechargeable Key The battery was new and went down through lack of use as the car will not start. I have recharged the battery and at present trying to recharge the key with three buttons which all work , lock , unlock. When the ign is turned on all lights are on the dials/dash. Turn to start and no clicks , nothing , with headlights on , there is no dimming whist turning the key. There are fault codes on the diagnostic relating to the Key which says KEY 3 not recognised. I am at present trying to establish whether the battery matters for rolling codes , assuming it’s a rechargeable key. I have also removed battery leads and touched them together to discharge the Ecus for a reset. I have also tried the other reset with the odometer buttons taking the reset to Number 21. I expect someone knows this procedure , whether it works I don’t know. Can anyone help! ? Please . Perhaps I should ask whether this car is 1st or 2nd Generation first so that I post in the right place please! Have been to the starter and manual cross the terminals and it turns the engine but doesn’t fire, itlooks like the only thing left is the key code as It still doesn’t turn the starter, I have checked the out going power lines from the starter switch and current flows out whilst going to turn the key to start. Not sure if this feed then goes to the Have been to the starter and manuall cross the terminals and it turns the engine but doesn’t fire, itlooks like the only thing left is the key code as It still doesn’t turn the starter, I have checked the out going power lines from the starter switch and current flows out whilst going to turn the key to start. Trying to start with a flat battery can cause problems, as the starter contactor does not exert its full pressure on the contacts. This can cause arcing and burning of the contacts and the resultant blobs of metal prevent good contact being made. This in turn causes high resistance and a considerable voltage drop, so preventing the engine from turning over. shorting the terminals together, of course, by-passes the contacts. In some cases it can weld the contacts together, and make the starter run continuously, and sometimes distort the plastic of the contactor body. Whatever the problem is, look at the basics before getting involved with key codes or ECU problems.

Can I aske the question out there. Is the key which apparently is rechargeable dependant on the batteries inside for the codes . Can I assume they are ok because they lock and unlock the doors its working correctly , apart from the fact that the diagnostic says Key 3 not recognized.

Can anyone answer the questions I posted, please .
I have also checked the ign wire to the starter solenoid and no signal, taken the ign switch off and no signs of bad connections . Aerial wire test on coil pick up left .

If it works like an E46, the key has to be coded to the car for the immobiliser to recognize the key. It seems like your car is not recognizing it properly, probably due to the car battery being flat for a while. The immobiliser piece works via a transponder so not impacted by the key battery. Try googling how to code a key to a mini.

I don't think you can code the key to an immobiliser (diy, anyway) , this can only be done by a specialist , ie BMW or a Electronics specialist.
This is what I have done , the EWS and the key was sent of to recode and sent back with a new coded key. Fault codes cleared and haven't come back, but car still hasn't turned over . I will have to try another starter switch , any good sources! To add , has anyone got some knowledge of the outputs on the starter switch, the wire Black and blue has no output on starting and seemingly no continuity, so basically not connecting on start position?, is that a problem of the switch. ll the other wires , red ones x2 are live 12v and switching ign the other wire , green, goes live ign on. To add does this model Mini One 2005 manual have a clutch switch , ..............please someone !

I think you will need to take the car to an indepedent specialist who has the professional coding equipment to diagnose the problem. You could end up paying far more if you resolve it by replacing one part after another.

Hi thanks , that’s the easy way out for a pocket of money , that’s why I’m on this forum to catch some ideas to resolve this.
unfortunately this is an old car owned by a young student which doesn’t equate to dealer prices. Honestly believe that the problem cannot be coded by a diagnostic . There are no codes and what there was has been resolved by a specialist with new ews and key . Thanks for your reply . Problem resolved!
