I've got myself a project ....

The story is that its been sat in a guys back garden since 1985. He got a company car and although he didnt need to drive this he couldnt bring himself to get rid of it. Then its the usual, he was going to do the work and never got round to it or had the cash.

Despite this, the car is suprisingly solid! It hasnt been just left to rot, its been checked on regularly and theres not a spot of mould on the interior.

It was love on first site, think it will make a great car with a bit of tlc! The guy seemed really pleased that someone wanted to restore her to.

Can get it out of the field until the end of the month, but i'll keep the thread updated on how i get on!

I thought you were going to end up getting something this month Steph, by the interest you were taking in the older cars at Duxford !!
Be interesting to see what it looks like when you have attacked it with claybar and paint cleaner .
Drive a BMW and you will have a smile on your face every time (and- drive twice as far as you need to !!)

I know, once i get something in my head thats it! This one was enough to make me sell one of my other cars for!

Think it will come up quite nice tbh! Its more mold and cobwebs than it is rust! I know it will need some work, and ive already bought some parts for it, even though i dont pick it up for a couple of weeks.

Cant wait to get started!!

Very brave.

My Dad bought a new one of those in '74, he didn't like the four much, and then bought the six and then a 535 and then a couple of E28s, he didn't rate the 5s after the demise of the E28s and defected to Mercedes.

Nice to see the steels on it, must keep those - please don't put big alloys on it.

Still got a whole bunch of stuff on these, just bought an E12 project myself - a 520 six.

Good luck.

Regards, Jon.

Thanks Jon!

No i was intending to keep it as standard as possible so steels are likely to stay!
Just think its just a gorgeous looking car, or could be with some tlc!

If i get stuck i know who to ask now then!

Cheers Steph

Neil

You would be surprised how brave Steph is for taking on challenges and opportunities.

She has cut her teeth on rebuilding classic Vauxhalls from an age when most young women are interested only in improving their make up collection!

The fact she has a 200 mile round trip every time she goes to work on the E12 shows how strong willed she is, and, that is on top of looking after her other cars, and, organising events for the Vauxhall owners club.

At our 7 series meetings last year, Steph was a very welcome honary members of our band of three  7 series Angels. If you come across them this year - BE WARNED; DO NOT MIX WITH EM !

RESPECT.

Sorry for the delayed responce but i've had some problems posting for some reason!

I havent got very far with the resto to be honest. I've had other projects on the go on top of swapping the daily drive to the sport and now ive lost my workshop so trying to find new storage for the E12 and all the parts ive collected! Its all been a bit stressfull!

I did have a bit of a play with the engine in the hope of getting it started, but unfortunately with the last couple of harsh winters, its a little seized. Once i've got it relocated, ive got a few tricks i can try, and if it comes to it, the engine will come out and i'll strip it down to find the problem. I can do that bit so it'll be fun. lol!

The brakes i expect to be shot. The system has been drained so i dont know if seals ect are leaking. I am thinking about ditching the twin servo setup for something off a newer model. Need to look into how that will work yet mind you.

I've had a poke about under the car to assess the amount of rot. Well its not as horrendous as one might expect. It needs new sills, which i have now got the pannels for, It needs some welding where the footwell has come away from the chassis, and there are a couple of holes in the doors behind the trim. Oh and the top edge of the bonnet is going. Bit of surface rust on the arches and thats about it.

The exhaust was never attached to the car when i got it, that bit the dust some time back i suspect, but i have a nice shiney one waiting to go on at some point.

As soon as i start to do any more to it, i will keep you updated!

Her she is along with my latest purchase..excuse the flat tyre!
