When I bought my M3, I always thought the handling was a bit 'off' but put it down to alignment and promised that I would get it sorted.
The other week, the car had it's oil service at Darren Wood's in Stockport and part of the check highlighted a snapped rear spring. As the price quoted for the part was £80ish before VAT, I figured that the other side may also be on it way out and following a quick calculation, it was probably worth considering uprating the springs...man logic rules. So as soon as I got home, I started mooching through the internet for reviews of different set ups before deciding that the OEM shock absorbers and Eibach Pro-Kit springs will suit my needs best - the criteria being a)cheap and b) comfy enough for my 500mile per week commute taking in the hateful M62 between Warrington and Halifax. During my internet browsing, I found that Evolve had some Rogue Engineering rear suspension top mounts on offer, well it would be rude not to I thought...more man logic. So bright and early, I arrived at Darren Woods for the spings to be fitted together with a few other jobs identified at the oil inspection (alternator belt tensioner, power steering hose, Vanos case gasket). I made myself comfy whilst Darren & Mike got stuck in and just after lunch the car was nearly done. Once complete, the road test Stig returned and reported all was well. Great service again chaps. Bill paid, time for home which I have to say was an great experience. The car feels a lot tighter and much more predictable yet it remains 99% of the original ride quality and I'm more than happy to trade the 1% drop in comfort with the increase in chassis feedback! Instead of the usual M62/M56/M6/M62 route home, I turned off the M56 at the Wilmslow junction and just before the runway tunnels, I turned right onto some great twisty roads which eventually take you behind Tatton Park and through Rostherne emerging at The Swan where the NW region meet is held. The car felt very secure and talkative thoughout, much more so than before. In summary, if you have an E46 M3, this has to be one the most cost effective upgrades there is. Parts: Rogue Engineering Rear Suspension Mounts £80(Evolve), Eibach Pro Kit Springs £150 (Larkspeed) Labour: £120 (free if you're handy with spanners) Resulting grin after a fun filled drive home: Priceless I'll post a couple of pics as the car now sits approx 20mm lower. |
