My 5 series was recently written off, so the wife and I decided to have a change from buying another 5 and bought a E70 3.0d X5 instead and just wondered if any other members have got one?

Two X5 owners on here then LOL

I'm currently looking/researching the E70 X5. I think I will probably go for a 2008/2009 3.0sd or Xdrive 35d.
I need to replace my E46 Touring with something that can tow my E36 M3.

Confusing all the model name changes (3.0d, 3.0sd, Xdrive 30d, 35d, 40d etc) but I'm getting there.
I have been searching for any common problems but cant see many on the forums/google.
I was wanting to know how reliable the twin turbo is compared to the single.

Hi Billy, I too researched long and hard. I opted for a 58 plated sd. This model is also known as the x-drive 35d. The car I have to say is pretty fab, loads of power and room but drives and handles like a sports saloon. As these things a pretty expensive I purchased my from a main dealer with warranty for peace of mind.
Good look in your search.

Cheers for the info. I drove one XDrive 35d and loved it. I think it will be the 35 or sd for me.
I need it to tow my E36 M3 track car and accommodate my Springer Spaniels.

Blimey for a while there I thought I was the only one who had an E70. Got to say for me it's been a grower. Didn't get off to a good start when the dealer didn't prep it right at delivery, with it having  to go back to have some remedial work done on it for a week and then it required both rear fog lights changing due to water ingress at a cost of £600 (covered by the warranty and dealer goodwill). Since then though I've really started to enjoy driving it and appreciate how useful it is as a family wagon. Although I've got a feeling the 20inch tyres won't be lasting that long.

Long may it continue.Smile

Unfortunately our's is 'only' 3.0 and I've no experince of any of the larger engined ones but mine's plenty fast enough for the missus who drives it during the week.

to be honest I think the 3.0 will be fine for me too. Having a twin turbo just for taking the dogs to the woods and back is probably a bit extravagant.

I'm finding loads of SE's but really want an M-Sport, I just think they look better. Most under $25k (can't find the pound key) have about 60K+ miles on them so a FSH & warranty is important. The warranty from BMW Approved is only one year which I feel is a bit crap. I just got a 2005 911 and that had a 2 year warranty.

The search continues.... as does the search for a nice trailer....

I was in the same boat, I wanted an Msport,  but I couldn't turn down the the Space Grey 3.0d SE I bought from my local dealer as it had pretty much every option on it except for the upgraded Nappa leather, 4 zone cliamte control and reversing camera. I think the list price was nudging £58k.

Hi Folks,

I have an e70, owned it now for 3 months.  Its the 3 L diesel version.

Had the water problem in the fog lights, they were goosed (looked like a terrible amateur repair) so replaced them altogether, cost about £240 and carried out the work myself, it was surprisingly easy.

Now having the droop from burst suspension bag, going to attempt that at the weekend.

Finally, air con unit goes odd quite regularly.  The display displays random images then flashes on and off until eventually, after anything between 1 and 20 minutes, resolving itself correctly.  All during this the aircon works properly so its not on the list to be fixed, yet…

Currently getting 31 MPG, not to bad.  Managed 33 MPG once however can't seem to achieve this again!

Will post pics of my suspension fix once its completed.

Oh, and one last niggle. I went to change the H8 bulbs and knocked out the wire retaining clip, I'll have to pencil in a load of time to come at the headlight from inside the wheel arch to replace it, damn my sausage fingers!

cheers
Anton

Smile Well, apparently I do need two turbos for taking the dogs to the woods...
I should be picking up a 12/2008 xDrive 35d M-Sport on Monday!
I put the deposit down weeks ago but have been stuck abroad since and am itching to get it collected.

Excellent news BullyB welcome to the club so to speak.

I've just had mine under a year now but have come unstuck with the BMW warranty. Basically because my car has crossed the 60k thershold the renewal is £2000 if I want a compreshensive one with zero excess,  even a basic drive line package is over £800 for the year with a £250 excess. This has left me with serious question to answer, do I not renew and run the risk or try a third part one (I got a quote from one company for £504 but am not sure if it's worth the virtual paper it's written on and they will try a wriggle out of any claim). I can't really afford even the most basic one at £67 a month with just moving house and the renovations that requires.

Does anyone else have any experiences god or bad?
