    Posted: 28 Mar 2014 at 10:50am
In 2016, BMW will be celebrating its 100th birthday. The Birthday Party will begin on the otherside pf the world, probably in New Zealand, and as the day progresses, celebrations will take place all around the world. It is not yet known how the BMW Clubs will celebrate the event, but it is hoped that clubs in every country will put on special events in co-operation with BMW Dealerships or stand alone.
More news will be posted here as it becomes available.

Well done Howard and the Fed.NO excuses for lack of Events Time to Celebrate this great milestone, with plenty of lead time.I hope BMW UK will be supporting many events in UK.

What type of Events would members want to see organised and attend.?

We have agreed with BMW UK to hold the Clubs attempt for the largest parade of BMW cars in 2016, date and venue TBC. The is a Guinness World record attempt and has been accepted by them. We will only have to re apply if there is any attempt beforehand.

This needs to be like Mini United was in 2009. Hold it over 3 days at Silverstone and put some good bands on with some nice cold beers Wink
Thanks

I think the plan will be to hold the attempt at the same time as the Silverstone Classic in 2016, I cannot be certain I just applied for the attempt on behalf of the club.

We were going to hold it this year, but at the request of BMW UK Ltd has decided we agree it would have better impact in 2016.

If it is held at Silverstone the entertainment one assumes would follow the Silverstone classic events package.

Norrie, I hope it is fingers crossed as BMW held the best car show I have ever been to in 2009 Mini United and I have been to a lot of shows for the last 20 odd years and they nailed it.
Thanks

In terms of this attempt it is by the BMWCCGB and not by BMW UK Ltd, but as their only official club we have a close relationship and have agreed to have it at 2016.

In terms of beating the record which is 187 (if I recall), the club should have no difficulty as we have had more cars than that at previous Silverstone Classic meets. I regret that the attempt under the Guinness rules does not include Minis, BMW's without the BMW roundels, motorbikes or BMWs whereby the original roundel has been replaced with something else. Nearer the time I suspect we will have to make sure that all cars wanting to participate meet these requirements. They are Guinness rules and not BMW Car club rules or even BMW UK rules, so sorry if you are excluded by this it is not in the control of the club.

Paul, we have lodged the attempt. However, we need to see what BMW UK Limited are prepared to do in terms of supporting the attempt and see how that fits in with Silverstone try it there.

Interesting and good events are listed, Germany a destination for those who can or have funds to attend, where permitted. What is going on in UK? I mean specifically that is exclusive to members of the BMWCCGB as opposed to anyone who has a BMW car.

We are more than happy to add 2 cars to the world record parade attempt in the form of a pair of M5s, E34 and F10.

I can only suggest you contact the Club office to find out what is going on as none of this is guaranteed, unless they or someone else knows.

In this centenary year I can't help reflecting on the fact that on 07 Mar 1916 the UK was at war with Germany. And that in the meantime a second major conflict in Europe has come and gone.
And now we are (rightfully) celebrating the 100 years of a company that used to make engines for warplanes.
It makes me realize how far we have come in terms of peace and unity in Europe.

Must be very low key - we had a tour of the Dingolfing plant last week and saw nothing, nor heard anything, concerning this milestone.

I don't know about 'We showed them the way' (ie to build aero engines) as Rolls Royce  had only just begun to build them, and our best engine - the Bentley rotary - was a totally different device, and in any case was based on a French design.  In the early years of WW1 the Royal Flying Corps was losing more aircraft (and parachute-less pilots) due to engine failure than enemy action - perhaps we should have given the Germans our designs!

The first true BMW design, the Type IIIa, was if anything based on some features of the Daimler-Benz engines which Max Friz had worked on before defecting to BMW, and which was used as a basis for the post-war Liberty Engine built in the United States.

There are very few new ideas in the engineering world - just better ways of doing the same thin.

A Z3 is not just for Christmas - it's for life!

Spoke to a few who went with and without the club, seems most people had a good time. Some said BMW Germany gave out mixed messages and that caused confusion.

Many grateful to Howard Walker for his intervention and help.

It was an okay event. The choice of music was a bit odd. Simply Red?

Mercedes Benz would have booked The Eagles and Kraftwerk.
