Occasionally when I get in the vehicle the fuel gauge reads very low when I know there is half a tank or more fuel in it. Just over 100000 miles.
Is this a common problem and is it the "sender" in the tank or is it the actual gauge??? If the sender, where is it and is it easy to access.
All help very much appreciated.
Thank you.

If you use 95 octane fuel, it could be that there is an accumulation of gum on the resistane track of the level sensor.  I used to have this problem when I lived in the UK, and had to use 95 octane, but found filling an almost empty tank with 97 octane gradually solved the problem.

There was a service advisory note telling dealers that in the case of 'Repeated customer complaints' to fit an improved gold-film sensor  -  in other words to put the customer off as long as possible before doing anything!

On my F11 the fuel gauge reads low when I'm sure there was plenty of diesel left. In my case it's operator error.
