2009 FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC)

Races 1 & 2 – 7th/ 8th March 2009 - Preview

Munich, 3rd March 2009. This weekend sees the start of the 2009 FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC), with the "Autódromo Internacional de Curitiba" hosting the opening two rounds of the series for the third consecutive season. BMW has entered its three national teams and their five drivers with the express aim of recapturing both world championships. To date BMW has scored four drivers’ and three manufacturers’ world titles in the touring car category.

"Naturally I am hopeful we will top the points’ charts in both championships at the end of the season," says BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen. "However, in motorsport such things cannot be planned. We can only work on our own performance, which we concentrated on throughout the winter. Once again it should be a close fight between us and SEAT, with Chevrolet being another worthy competitor. We are well prepared."

Triple world champion Andy Priaulx (GB) will once again be competing under the BMW Team UK banner, with Jörg Müller (DE) and Augusto Farfus (BR) representing BMW Team Germany. Alessandro Zanardi (IT) of BMW Team Italy-Spain has a new team-mate in Sergio Hernández (ES).

Andy Priaulx (BMW Team UK):
"Every year I look forward to being in Curitiba. The city has many different sides to it, and could easily be in Europe. The circuit is interesting and challenging, and BMW has traditionally achieved good results there. Everybody hopes for a strong start to a new season, so I will endeavour to have a good opening weekend."

Jörg Müller (BMW Team Germany):
"Curitiba sees the end of the off-season. The two races are extremely important and the first real opportunity to compare performances. All the teams have tested thoroughly over the winter, and now it will become clear who has made the most progress. I have won in Brazil, so the circuit evidently suits me."

Augusto Farfus (BMW Team Germany):
"Curitiba is my home town, so naturally I love returning here. As hometown hero there are, though, particular pressures. Overall the feeling is positive, for there are thousands of fans all cheering me on together. I hope to start the 2009 season with the right momentum."

Alessandro Zanardi (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
"I like the Curitiba circuit. However, I would prefer it to be twice the length. Despite the lap being short, it’s just all about being faster than the opposition – which is precisely what I intend being. Everybody looks forward to this event to see where they stand. We are well prepared, so hopefully I’ll return to Europe a happy man."

Sergio Hernández (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
"I like the circuit and people of Curitiba. Mentally the Brazilian people are similar to the Spanish. The atmosphere at this event is unique. Over the past two years I have amassed a lot of experience, which I hope to put to good use in my debut for BMW Team Italy-Spain by fighting for points and race wins."

History and Background:
The "Autódromo Internacional de Curitiba" hosts the FIA World Touring Car Championship for the fourth time since 2006. The past two years has seen the capital of the Brazilian province Paraná have the honour of staging the season’s opening events.

Three of the six races held to date on the 3.695-kilometre circuit have been won by BMW drivers. In 2006 Andy Priaulx celebrated a victory in Brazil; the following year saw Jörg Müller and Augusto Farfus each make it to the top step of the podium.

Curitiba has a population of approximately 1.7 million inhabitants, and is situated 340 kilometres south-west of São Paulo, where the BMW Sauber F1 Team will contest the Grand Prix of Brazil on 18. October 2009. Curitiba was founded in 1693 by Portuguese colonialists, and is the most progressive of all Brazil’s cities.

Brazil’s first national university was opened in Curitiba in 1913. Rapid population growth in the second half of the 20th century saw Curitiba adopt sustainable and ecologically sound city planning and transport policies, earning it the title of "World’s Most Innovative City" in 1996.

Construction of the circuit started in 1965, and was completed two years later. A comprehensive rebuild programme, which saw the infield oval added, was undertaken in the mid-nineties, making the circuit one of the most modern in Brazil.

Curitiba sees the debut of a new WTCC qualifying format: All competitors will contest a 20-minute qualifying session, with those recording the ten fastest lap times progressing to a ten-minute shoot-out for the first pole position of the year.

The first race of the new season, to be televised live on Eurosport 2, gets under way with a rolling start at 13:05 local time (16:05 GMT). The second race, with a standing start format, is scheduled for 16:05 local time (19:05 GMT), and will be transmitted live on Eurosport International.

2009 FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC)
Rounds 1 and 2 – 7th/8th March 2009, Curitiba (BR) – Qualifying

Müller fastest BMW driver in first WTCC qualifying of the season.

Curitiba, 7th March 2009. BMW Team Germany’s Jörg Müller (DE) claimed sixth place on the grid for the season opener of the 2009 FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) with a lap time of 1:24.637 minutes. The 39-year-old was the best-placed BMW national team driver in qualifying at the "Autódromo Internacional de Curitiba", finishing 0.441 seconds behind pole-sitter Yvan Muller (FR, SEAT). His team-mate, Augusto Farfus (BR), was seventh, while BMW Team UK’s Andy Priaulx (GB) claimed tenth on the grid for the first race on Sunday. Both BMW Team Italy-Spain drivers, Sergio Hernández (ES) and Alessandro Zanardi (IT), failed to get into the decisive top-ten shootout.

"Obviously we had hoped for a better start to the new season," said Friedhelm Nohl, General Manager Engineering, Sports and Touring Cars. "By finishing sixth Jörg was our best-placed driver, less than half a second behind the man on pole. With Augusto and Andy we have two more drivers in the top-ten. Sergio narrowly missed the second session. However, we still hope to be involved in the fight for podium positions in Sunday’s races."

As early as in the first part of qualifying, which was run to a new format with two separate sessions, Müller was the quickest BMW driver after finishing fifth. While the German booked his ticket for the second part along with Priaulx and Farfus, Hernández and Zanardi were eliminated thanks to being 11th and 14th. The 20-minute session was red-flagged for five minutes after an accident involving BMW privateer driver, Kristian Poulsen (DK), but ran without any further interruptions.

Müller said: "My car was good today, and I managed to be the fastest of all the drivers powered by a petrol engine. I am not really convinced by the new qualifying format. We saw even fewer cars running on the track than before, and there were a lot of tactics in play. Tomorrow I will try to gain as many positions as possible."

Unlike Müller, who set his lap time after six of the ten minutes in "Q2", Farfus and Priaulx waited until two minutes before the end of the session before going out. "During the second session the track conditions changed," commented Farfus. "Therefore, the set-up of my car was no longer at 100 percent. Now I will fight hard tomorrow to gain as much ground as possible and to put on a good show for my home fans."

Priaulx explained: "Our strategy didn’t quite pay off today. That’s disappointing, as it had looked positive after my early runs. Due to s problem with a brake calliper in the morning I lost one set of tyres. Nevertheless, I will push hard to score two good results on Sunday."

The first race of the World Touring Car Championship will start on 13:05hrs local time (16:05hrs GMT) tomorrow, race two will get underway at 16:05hrs (19:05hrs GMT).

2009 FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC)
Rounds 1 and 2 – 7
th/8th March 2009, Curitiba (BR) – Race

Farfus most successful BMW driver in Brazil – Müller launches fight back.   BMW press release.

Curitiba, 8th March 2009. On the opening weekend of the 2009 FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC), BMW Team Germany’s Augusto Farfus (BR) was the most successful member of the BMW national teams. In the first race of the season the 25-year-old finished fifth in front of his home crowd in Curitiba (BR). In race two, he added sixth place to his tally on a wet track. His team-mate, Jörg Müller (DE), was the man of the second round, in which the 39-year-old drove his BMW 320si WTCC from 21st on the grid to finish fifth.

Sergio Hernández (ES) of BMW Team Italy-Spain and BMW Team UK’s Andy Priaulx (GB) also scored championship points in the first race by finishing sixth and seventh. However, SEAT dominated proceedings at the "Autódromo Internacional de Curitiba" and celebrated two clean sweeps by claiming the top four positions. The win in race one was secured by Yvan Muller (FR), Gabriele Tarquini (IT) claimed victory in race two.

Müller’s hopes for a strong result in race one ended as early as Turn 3. Running in fifth place he was hit by Chevrolet’s Alain Menu (CH), who rejoined after cutting the chicane. Following this bump with Menu, Müller collided with Priaulx and had to pit with a handling problem. He went out again a few minutes later, but finished five laps down on the winner. Priaulx dropped to 19th with a damaged right front wheel, but fought his way back up to ninth.

Due to this incident, Farfus improved from seventh to fifth and eventually finished sixth. The progress of Hernández was the best, crossing the line in seventh after starting from 11th. His team-mate, Alessandro Zanardi (IT), improved from 14th to 12th. All BMW national team drivers benefited from a time penalty after the chequered flag for two drivers who had finished in front of them, thus gaining two places each. Priaulx was classified seventh, securing two points and a front-row grid position for race two alongside BMW privateer Félix Porteiro (ES) of Proteam Motorsport.

Thirty minutes before the start, a heavy thunderstorm hit the 3.685-kilometre circuit. The race therefore got underway ten minutes late and was started behind the safety-car. In these conditions, the BMW drivers running at the front were unable to defend their positions. Only Farfus and Porteiro managed to translate their promising grid positions into points. Müller, on the other hand, coped really well with the conditions and launched an impressive fight back. From 21st place he improved lap by lap, finally taking the chequered flag in fifth.

Friedhelm Nohl (General Manager Engineering, Sports and Touring Cars):
"This weekend, SEAT was unbeatable – in both dry and wet conditions. However, our drivers also had some highlights. Andy managed to move up from the back of the field in race one following a collision at the start. Jörg put in a fantastic performance in the second race, improving from 21st to fifth. Augusto and Sergio finished in the top eight in both races. So we at least took home some points. Now we must immediately set our sights on the future. We will do our best to close the gap to the frontrunners as quickly as possible."

Andy Priaulx (BMW Team UK):
"I was just relieved to finish race one, despite the incident after the start, and I was feeling pretty confident for race two from the front row of the grid. Sadly what I felt would be a good race for me turned into a nightmare. For some reason I just could not drive the car in the wet conditions, and I was going backwards in race two. It was a shame as up to then I was happy with how things had gone."

Jörg Müller (BMW Team Germany):
"Following the disappointment in race one the successful fight back in the second felt really sweet. We made the perfect set-up choice for these conditions. At first, we considered taking the risk to run on dry tyres, but then we forgot the idea as there was just too much water on the track. Had the race gone on for another few laps I could have made it even further up. Overall I’m happy."

Augusto Farfus (BMW Team Germany):
"We have done what we could – however, that was not good enough this weekend. For race two we opted for a dry set-up, in order to have an advantage over the course of the race. But the circuit didn’t dry out fast enough, so our decision didn’t pay off."

Sergio Hernández (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
"I’m satisfied with my race one result and also with the way the relationship with my new team worked out. However, it was disappointing to lose points in race two due to a collision."

Alessandro Zanardi (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
"This was a disappointing weekend. I didn’t manage to be quick enough in the dry or the wet. We will now have a close look at the reasons for that. I had hoped to benefit from my new sequential gearbox at the standing start of race two, but the rain took this opportunity away from me."
