BMW national teams and WTCC travel to Marrakech for first time.

  • 27.04.2009
  • Press Release
Munich, 27th April 2009. After a break of over four weeks, the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) returns to action with one of the season’s true highlights: the series will make its debut in Marrakech (MA) this weekend, marking the first time in its history that the WTCC has staged two races on the African continent. However, the “Circuit de Marrakech” is not the only one celebrating its debut. The BMW 320si WTCC has had a facelift prior to races five and six of the season. BMW 3 Series production cars have sported the new design modifications since last year, and it is now time to introduce the car’s even more elegant, sporting profile to the racetrack.

Marrakech also sees the new “compensation weight” come into play for the first time. This is aimed at balancing out the difference in performance between individual models of car. Based on the lap times achieved in Curitiba (BR) and Puebla (MX), the BMW 320si WTCC with the five-speed H-pattern gearbox and the SEAT León TDI have turned out to be the reference models. This means that Andy Priaulx (GB) from BMW Team UK, the two BMW Team Germany drivers, Augusto Farfus (BR) and Jörg Müller (DE), and Sergio Hernández (ES) from BMW Team Italy-Spain must each carry an extra 40 kilograms of ballast. In contrast, Hernández’ team-mate Alessandro Zanardi (IT), who is competing with a six-speed sequential gearbox, will start with 20 kilos less than in Brazil and Mexico.

Andy Priaulx (BMW Team UK):
“Marrakech will be my second street race within a week. Taking part in the London Marathon on Sunday was a great experience, although the last mile felt like the longest of my life. Street circuits are also very challenging in WTCC, but the fact that this one is new and unknown just goes to make it all the more complicated.”

Jörg Müller (BMW Team Germany):
“I’m intrigued by Marrakech. It is nice, even after so many years in motorsport, to race at new circuits. The compensation weight ought to cause changes to positions.”

Augusto Farfus (BMW Team Germany):
“I'm always keen on travelling to new countries and meeting interesting people. Normally I do quite well on street circuits. However, with all its long straights the Marrakech circuit doesn’t have much in common with typical street tracks like Pau. This makes it very interesting.”

Alessandro Zanardi (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
“On Marrakech’s long straights the reduced weight of my car due to the compensation weight system should be an advantage. I hope we will be able to build on the performance we showed in Puebla. Morocco will be an interesting adventure.”

Sergio Hernández (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
“Finally we go racing again. It's great to return to the cockpit at such an interesting place like Marrakech. After our promising performance in Puebla I'm fired up to score some more points in Morocco.”

Three BMW drivers qualify for top-ten grid positions in Morocco.

  • 02.05.2009
  • Press Release
Marrakech, 2nd May 2009. In qualifying for the fifth round of the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) in Marrakech (MA), a trio of BMW drivers successfully made it into the top-ten. BMW privateer, Franz Engstler (DE), surprised everyone by setting a 1:51.643-minute lap and taking eighth on the grid for his team at the “Circuit de Marrakech”. BMW Team Germany’s Jörg Müller (DE) finished ninth. Due to damaging a tyre early on in the session, the 39-year-old was denied the chance to compete for top positions in the second part of qualifying.

BMW Team UK driver, Andy Priaulx (GB), also managed to qualify for “Q2” after coming eighth in the first phase. However, following an unlucky collision with BMW Team Italy-Spain’s Sergio Hernández (ES), who finished 18th, shortly before the end of “Q1” the triple world champion was also robbed of his chance to secure a better result. Hernández’ team-mate, Alessandro Zanardi (IT) missed “Q2” by just 0.003 seconds and had to make do with 11th. Augusto Farfus (BR) came 13th for BMW Team Germany.

“Obviously I’m totally over the moon,” said Engstler after his impressive performance. “Normally circuits like this one here in Marrakech don’t really suit my driving style. Therefore I’m even happier now that I made it into the top-ten. I didn’t expect this at all. Now I’m fired up to take the Independents’ win tomorrow from P8.” Müller qualified for “Q2” by coming ninth in the first phase. He was on his warm-up lap, when a shredded tyre destroyed all his hopes of improving. “I went over the kerbs too aggressively,” said the German. “That’s why my tyre got ripped off the rim. Overall I’m disappointed about how big our gap to the front-runners is here. Nevertheless, I will give my all in the races, as many things can happen on tracks as narrow as this one.”

Priaulx also suffered a dose of bad luck. He had just set the eighth-fastest lap time, and secured his ticket to “Q2”, when he collided with Hernández in Turn 1 and damaged the right rear section of his car. With the help of the track marshals Priaulx managed to get back on track and make it to the pits. As he had received outside assistance, Priaulx was not allowed to take part in the second qualifying phase. The Guernsey-man will start the first race on African soil on Sunday from tenth.
“Had anyone told me I would make it into the top-ten, I wouldn’t have believed it,” commented Priaulx. “Compared to the front-runners, our car is clearly lacking performance. I don’t blame Sergio for our accident. A big thank you to Alessandro Zanardi, who gave me the crucial tow just before this incident.”

Pole position in Marrakech was secured by Chevrolet’s Robert Huff (GB) who relegated his team-mate, Alain Menu (CH), and SEAT driver Gabriele Tarquini (IT) to second and third respectively. The fifth race of the FIA World Touring Car Championship will start on 13:05hrs local time (14:05hrs BST) on Sunday, race two will get underway at 14:20hrs (15:20hrs BST).

BMW Team Germany scores points at WTCC debut in Morocco.

  • 03.05.2009
  • Press Release
Marrakech, 3rd May 2009. BMW Team Germany added some points to its tally in rounds five and six of the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) in Marrakech (MA). In race one at the “Ciruit de Marrakech” it was Jörg Müller (DE) who scored one point by finishing eighth, with Chevrolet’s Robert Huff (GB) emerging as the winner. Starting from pole position, Müller was fourth in race two. His team-mate Augusto Farfus (BR) finished 12th and sixth respectively. BMW private driver Franz Engstler (DE) had a satisfying afternoon, as by finishing eighth in race two he scored a championship point. The second round was won by Nicola Larini (IT, Chevrolet).

The first FIA World Championship races on Moroccan soil since 1958 were less successful for the other BMW national team drivers. BMW Team UK’s Andy Priaulx (GB) missed a points’ finish in race one after crossing the line tenth and had to retire in the second race of the day. BMW Team Italy-Spain driver Sergio Hernández (ES) did not finish the race either, coming 14th in race one. His team-mate Alessandro Zanardi (IT) wasn’t able to start race two, after suffering substantial damage to his car’s cooler, which meant an engine change.

In the Drivers’ Championship Farfus stays the best-placed BMW driver. With 23 points under his belt, the 25-year-old is fifth. SEAT’s Yvan Muller (FR) is still top with 43 points. In the manufacturers’ standings, BMW holds second with 64 points, while SEAT is again in the lead, having scored 93 points to date.

Following race two BMW Team Germany filed a protest on behalf of the BMW national teams against the four SEAT León TDI cars that started this race. The protest is aimed at receiving clarification of the technical regulations regarding the precise definition of the maximum boost pressure of 2.5 bar in turbo-diesel engines. Therefore the results remain suspended pending the technical checks of the concerning cars.

Apart from a safety-car phase at the start, when Rickard Rydell (SE) crashed his SEAT into the wall, the first race at the extremely narrow track went without further interruptions – and without many overtaking manoeuvres. Because of this, Müller’s good start meant he was able to defend his eighth grid position to the line, and secure pole position for race two. Priaulx lost one place at the start and came home in tenth, while Farfus improved from 13th to 12th. Hernández made the biggest progress, gaining five places to eventually finish 14th. Zanardi was involved in a collision, which saw his car heavily damaged, forcing the Italian to retire on lap four. The damage to his cooler prevented him from competing in the second race of the day.

Müller shot off well from pole position in race two and fended off attacks from the opposition for a remarkable period. On lap nine, however, he could now longer defend his lead from Larini, who was running in a much lighter Chevrolet car. Muller and Huff also managed to get past him. Müller held on to fourth until the end of the race, thus taking five points home to Europe. His team-mate Farfus had an excellent start, improving from 12th to seventh. When Alain Menu (CH, Chevrolet) slowed down on lap five, the Brazilian gained another position, which he kept until the chequered flag. Engstler also put in a flawless performance, recording victory in the Independents’ Trophy and one championship point by coming eighth. Hernández had to retire after an accident, which caused another safety-car phase in the early stages of the race. Priaulx didn’t make it to the line either, as he had to pit on lap 12 due to brake problems.
Reactions:

Jörg Müller (BMW Team Germany):
“This is the best result possible today. Our rivals had a clear advantage on this track. It was just a matter of time before Larini would pass me. He pushed me slightly off line. If this happens on a track like this, the tyres instantly pick up dirt, making it impossible to accelerate smoothly out of the corner. That’s why other cars managed to overtake me as well. I fought as long as I could – and this was good fun!”

Augusto Farfus (BMW Team Germany):
“In race two it was just important not to risk too much in order to safely score at least a few points. Having a bad qualifying on such a track, where overtaking is virtually impossible, means you cannot expect any miracles during the races. Thanks to a good start I moved up from 12th to sixth, which is a positive result. The gap to the front-runners, however, was just too big.”

Andy Priaulx (BMW Team UK):
“We just weren’t competitive enough here. In the first race I was not in a position to attack, but was just defending. In the second my problems got even bigger, when I had troubles with my brakes. This was a weekend to forget.”

Sergio Hernández (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
“I want to leave this weekend behind as quickly as possible. In race two I was taken out by a competitor, which reflects this entire weekend. I will now focus on the next races in Pau. I will push hard and hope we will be much stronger there.”

Alessandro Zanardi (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
“In the first race I was hit by several cars and never got into my rhythm. But that’s racing. In one incident my cooler was damaged, which forced me into retirement. The engineers changed the engine, but there just wasn’t enough time to get the car ready for race two.”
