Hi all, I have a 2004 118d and the windscreen washer has started to play up. You can hear the pump/going but only a small amount of washer comes out of the jets. The jets are clear.
Does anyone know if this is a common problem and is it an easy job to change the pump/motor and where is it situated.
All the best Keith.

Sorry for the daft reply...
but...is the washer tank full with water? If it is about to get empty, then it may act the way you describe it.

That was not a silly question, that was the first thing I checked and it was still playing up after I topped the reservoir up.

you'll probably find that the hose has come slightly loose from either a joint or from the motor. Easy fix, put it back on and wrap a cable tie on to stop it comming off again. Problem is finding it! Its probably in the wheel arch area, like the E90 its a common fault.

I had the same problem after some recent frosty mornings. Operating the frozen windscreen washer forced the pipes off the nozzles feeding through the bonnet. It was an easy fix once everything had thawed out. Just pushed the hoses back onto the nozzles under the bonnet.

I'd suggest pulling the pipe off the back of the washer jet and with an airline, blow back through the pipe. All new BMWs have a filter on their pumps. I suspect that is clogged.
If when you refit the pipe you now have pressure I would advise removing the bottle and cleaning out the rubbish at the bottom of it

Had the same problem, water dribbles out of the front jets.
1) So took off the front wheel 2) took of the inner arch casing in order to get at the 2 water pumps 3) Swapped around the water pipes between the 2 water pumps to isolate if it was a pump problem. 4) And it was, So pulled out the front pump and there was this white slime in the filter!! (the filter is underneath the pump unit, it sits inside the water tank). 5) Removed it and used steradent to flush out and clean any that was left in the water tank. 6) left it in for about 45min then flushed it all out. 7) Problem fixed! It wasnt easy sliding the water tank out from the wheel arch in order to get at the pump! ![]() ![]() Hope this helps. |

Hi, the white slim is a common problem. Mixing the original BMW washer fluid with certain other brands causes it to turn into that white slim as described. It's not exactly known why it actually does this, but a full system flush is the only way to solve it.
Great "how to" as well
