The car is ready to collect from the bodyshop - but we had snow last night and as the country generally grinds to a hault in the snow, I aborted the 160 mile round trip for the collection - it'll be mid to late next week now.

Here's some pictures though with doors, bonnet, boot and roof hatch re-attached. Car has been cleaned ready for collection - looking good! The hood is unlatched as the rear end presses onto the roof hatch with a rubber seal, so I guess the guys want to leave it unlatched as long as possible, following the fresh paint.

Looking forward to getting it back.

Engines looking good too, just waiting for a couple of seals and gaskets to turn up, then that will be ready - photo's tomorrow.

Cheers,

Mart.

It's been great to see so much love and attention being put into an old E30. I wish the same could be said for my old motor, but sadly for several reasons,mainly £££££ signs, that's not going to happen. Mind you I have been shamed into putting a bit more effort in to TLC for the old girl, so rear end re-build booked in for the end of the year and seats off for repair and re stitching soon.
Mart, I'm looking forward to the finished project and some shots on the road. Mind you, I note you bought the car for your Mrs. After all this, does she get to drive it, or is it like the train set bought for the kids that they never get to touch?LOL

Thanks for your reply - I hope you continue improving your E30!

And, yes, my wife will get to drive it - shops, gym, town, wherever! She works from home, so it won't have to suffer the 'company car park' which is a positive. She's also pretty careful where she parks our cars, etc and is a good safe drive, so I have very few concerns.....

Cheers,

Martin.

Finally picked up the car today;

Set off at 7.30 this morning.
Picked up my pals V70, as I needed the towbar.
Hacked back to the workshop and collected the trailer.
Finally got away at 0915....
Arrived at the bodyshop at 1115.
Loaded up, coffee, chat and away by 1300.
Arrived back at the w'shop at 1515.
Unlaoded, tea, talked bollocks.
On the ramp at 1600.
Cracked on with a few bits....
Home 2030, tired...

Loaded up at the bodyshop and ready to go;

Back at the 'shop and on the ramp;

They've done a great job, I'm really pleased!

The engine is looking good and is ready to go back in;

Where to start..... at the front, I think!

The wiring was a mess and the fabric tape was hanging off.... decided to rewrap it as I had some tape left over from the build of the black BMW;

I cleaned up the inner wing area and put the freshly refurbished headlamps in with new bolts;

I pulled the rear lights out next, cleaned them up and gave the gaskets a smeer of vasaline on both sides to rejuvinate them;

Rear lights installed;

Mirrors have been colour coded;

Thats as far as I got today, loads to do, so I've taken tomorrow and Friday off work to get cracking with it.

Cheers,

Mart.

Had a good day in the 'shop today. Got a fair bit done - always takes longer than you think, especially when all the bits need cleaning, etc.

Windscreen refitted;

Boot lock in;

E30 rust trap (rear lower quarter/boot) was repaired and painted - liberal amounts of wax now applied;

N/S inner rear wheel arched waxed;

Doors waxed, along with inner sills, etc;

Replacement front panel;

The chrome bumpers are in good shape, but have some surface rust on the inside - this was attacked with wire brush on the drill and treated with rust inhibiting wax - should last a little while longer;

I think this fog light is past its best....

Replacement Hella units were good value from ECP, including a pals cheeky 40% discount!

Front 'Jimmy Hill' spoiler fitted;

Sill trims fitted with new clips;

Side repeaters fitted;

Indicator lenses removed and cleaned - plain bulbs replaced with orange bulbs as lenses are slightly faded;

Polished the front bumper with Autosol and cleaned the rubbers;

Front grilles cleaned and fitted;

Looking rather good - pleased with the progress today.....  Engine in tomorrow!

Cheers,

Mart.

Another long, but productive day.....

Refubished PAS pump attached to motor;

The brake servo was a bit rusty, so was rubbed down and painted;

Starter motor ready for paint;

Side trims refurbished and fitted with new clips;

Rear bumper fitted - the w'shop dog 'Diesel' wanted in on the pic;

The bumper was treated to the same rust inhibiting wax on the inside and the bumper brackets were repainted - no pics, sorry - used Autosol to polish the chrome, celulose thinners to clean the rubbers and Mer vinyl cleaner to give it some shine;

Reinforcements arrived and the engine was back on the crane, ready for installation;

Engine bay was made ready;

In it goes....

New radiator from ECP - I've done the head and renewed the water pump, so for £50 and new rad was a no brainer, especially as the old one looked way past its best - fittings swapped;

Viscous fan cleaned and ready for installation;

Window trims ready for the big door build tomorrow.....

Gearbox and prop tomorrow, along with exhaust - it'll be running by lunchtime.... Doors built up with glass and trims by close of play...

Cheers,

Mart.

Great piece to put in the magazine or in the newsletter if up for it

Catch up with you soon - bring it along to some events if you can this year especially Silverstone

If you are stuck for any bits let me as have broken several cabs early and later over last couple of years

Thanks Neil.

I'd be happy to do a piece for the magazine, it would be a pleasure. Also happy to show it at some events - got the black E3 too, so will need 2 drivers - I'm trying to get my wife involved.... we'll see....

My credit card bill is fine, thanks - I haven't bought too many new bits;

Full gasket set
Water pump
Cam belt kit
Thermostat
Radiator
Front fags
Second hand front panel
Various tins of paint
Refurb cylinder head

I think I have spend about £1k on the above, plus a few hundred in labour to my pal who has helped me with the welding and mechanicals. I've restored everything I can off the car and have only bought new bits where it is absolutely necessary - restore, not replace is the motto of this build. It's certainly not a 'cheque book' build!

I'll add it up at the end and post the total.

Cheers,

Martin.

Well, I seem to have a picture issue with Photobucket - they want money to upgrade....

So, no picture update this time, sorry!

Engine is in, gearbox, prop and exhaust on.... Engine running today - sounds great, smooth, etc. Slightly overfuelling, I think, so the blue temp sensor might be at fault - I think it is like a cold start temp sensor and is apparently a common problem on E30's.... I've got some test values so I'll get the multi meter on it next week.

Drove the car out the workshop to do an emergency exhaust repair on a mates car, for the MoT next week - so the ol'Cabrio is moving under its own power once again!

Still to do;

Build the doors up - window mechs, glass, locks, trims, etc.
Refurbish interior, re-colour and refit.
Refit bonnet, wipers and washers.

It's been a long 3 to 4 days, but we've broken the back of the work required to get the car back on the road.... its all down hill from here!

Cheers,

Martin

My pictures work again, so he'res the update from Saturday/Sunday last week;

We've been cleaning and polishing the inner wings, as these were not painted, and were in reasonable condition. The factory stickers are poor, but I have found a chap on E30zone who produces replacements, so I have oredered a set of replacements - pictures taken for future reference;

Finished cleaning and painting some of the engine appendages - this seems to have taken for ever, I've clean and or painted everything off the car and frankly I'm fed up with cleaning now....

Starter Motor painted;

AFM painted;

The expansion tank went through a wash cycle in the dishwasher at home - Mrs R was not happy - it came up really well though;

Alternator cleaned up ok;

Dizzy cover and fan cowls cleaned and installed;

AFM and airbox, etc, installed;

Gearbox on, shields on, prop on, exhaust on - sorry, no pics...

Oil, antifreze, etc, battery charged, and.....

Engine running!!!!

No, honestly, it is running!

We needed the ramp for a quick welding job on an exhaust, pre-MoT, for a mate, so the car was kicked out the shop - under it's own steam!

Everything seems to work, no leaks, and all the smoke remained within the wiring, which is a bonus!

Number plate attached;

I then dragged all of the 3 leather interior I have collected back to my home, so that I can do the refurb in the clean, warm environment of my garage. I plan to make 1 good interior out of the 3, by swapping damaged and undamaged items - the great thing is that a passenger backrest can become a drivers backrest as they have latches on both sides of the seat, and lower seat cushions can be removed from based and swapped too. The driver seats always get the most abuse, and passenger seats are generally in good condition, so with 3 interiors, I am confident on getting a good base to start the refurb;

I've bought leather restoration and recolouring products from Furniture Clinc, so will get started today and complete over the weekend, with luck!

Cheers,

Mart

Looking good, I can vouch for the quality of the decals if they are from Pukar designs (Atul), I have bought some for my E30 M3 and they are brilliant.

Think about what you can do for the club, not what it can do for you...

Right! I've been distracted by work for a couple of weeks, as RBS have decided to close the part of the business down that I work for, brilliant! I'll remain to run the 'book' off over 12 to 18 months then its the big R for me....

Anyway, back to business.

I started to build the doors back up - I didn't take them apart, the bodyshop did - so it was frustrating;

They did however try and make it easy by boxing the parts for each side;

Fiddly bloody things! Still havn't finished them....

I dug out the wheels that came on my pals E30 that he is going to track - one day.... They are period Dealer option wheel, I understand;

7x15" with a nice dish;

They might look good on the Cab - different anyway - thoughts?

On to the interior!

The seats were in a bad state and I've ended up buying 2 further beige leather interiors, so that I can make 1 good set from the 3.

The E30zone is a good source of info and there is a 'how to' for most things, including how to take the seats apart;

With the seat backs off the front bases, it is much easier to work on them. I'm using a Furiture Clinc car interior restoration kit, which comes with all the necessary chemicals, abrasives, foam pads, cloths, dye, sealant, air bush, etc. The instructions are comprehensive and easy to follow - what could possibly go wrong....

The first thing is to strip the old sealant off the seats using a 'special' chemical on a scotchbrite pad - yes, you literally scrub the surface with the pad and the finished surface of the leather comes off! Now, maybe they didn't supply enough of the 'special' chemical, or maybe I used too much, but I was running out of the stuff quickly.... Luckily my wife popped into the garage with a cup of tea (I'm doing this job at home) and she declared that it 'stunk of acetone' - now, she should know, as she does nails, etc for a living, so off she goes to her treatment room and brings me 5 litres of acetone - brilliant;

You can see how it strips the surface;

Some areas discolour more than others, but the object of the exercise is to remove the laquer/sealent from the leather so the new dye will take.

Next up is to start to repair and tears and cracks in the surface of the leather. As I had a choice of seats, I decided upon the best ones to start with, but all had some damage, especially the fronts. The small tears on the front bolster were repaired by inserting a small piece of cloth behind the tear/rip and then glue into place;

Next up, all the cracks are filled using a flexible filler that is supplied with the kit. This is simply smoothed on using a small plastic spatula in very thin layers, leaving the minimum of excess - which is hard to remove;

I put too much on intitially and left it to dry, to my cost, as it is a bugger to sand down - lesson learned;

You keep laoding the flexible filler in to the cracks in very thin coats, leaving each one to dry before the next - very time comsuming, but you get a good result in the end;

This is the worst bolster I repaired the rips/tears on _ we'll see how this turns out, fingers crossed;

The passenger seat is in much better condition and required fewer repairs, etc;

Repairs complete;

I know what you are thinking, I thought the same - this is never going to look any good, right? Well, I had to crack on and see if the system would work, as promised, but I had my doubts.....

The next step was to sponge the dye onto the seats - it looks rough and streaky, but thats ok, according to the instructions;

Even after a couple of streaky sponge coats the drivers bolster starts to look better'

I sponge coated all the seat parts and then left it to dry overnight. Next day it was onto applying the dye with the air bush that was supplied in the kit. Once set up correctly, the air brush worked well. The downside is that it uses pressurised cans of propellent and when you use them lots they get very cold and the pressure drops - so you have to keep them warm or keep swapping them out. Also, the reservoir for the dye is quite small, so constant refils are required.

But, the results are good;

Driver side seat looks good;

So, thats where we are upto so far. I need to add a 'superseal' coating and then a semi matt laquer - that'll be the seats finished!

Then its on to the door cards, seat backs and rear deck lid - these need to follow a slightly different process as they are vinyl not leather and therefore, after the initial strip, they need a bonding agent sprayed onto them which the colour dye can adhere to.

You know what, I think this interior might turn out ok!

Cheers,

Martin.

Between jobs on the interior, I got over to the workshop and did a few more bits on the car.

The heater motor would only work on number 4, so I thought I needed a new switch, but the chaps on the E30zone told me it would be the resistor that sits in the bottom of the heater box/bolwer compartment. So, it was off with the bulkhead cover, which revealed something odd;

Ahhhh, a little nest in the blower...

No mouse though!

Resistor replaced and the fan works on all speeds now, great!

The wipers were an issue too. They would stop halfway across the screen or judder - particularly on intermitent setting. Again, the E30zone wiki of 'how to' came to the rescue. I thought it was the wiper stalk, but no... tis the motor they say. So I pulled it out of the scuttle and followed the instructions - pretty simple. The contacts were corroded and the mechanism was dirty with solid grease that looked like ear wax;

Clean up the contacts and regreased;

Stuck it back in and it works a treat now - no stopping, juddering and the wipers are faster too!

Wiper mechanism was attached and scuttle trims clipped back on

Bulkhead trim cleaned and bolted on;

Wipers on - job done;

Cheers!

Mart.

Fantastic Martin, those seats look great, i was a bit sceptical about the furniture clinic stuff as it seemed like it was hyped up a bit, but your results prove me wrong!

Nice to know that there is a fellow E30 enthusiast in the form of a mouse, it could have made a nice car pet!

I was sceptical too! But, after reading the link you sent me it gave me the confidence to go ahead - although my seats were much worse that those vaders!

With this car I have tried wherever possible to restore, not replace and unless I wanted to go to the huge expense of a full retrim, this was the only option. I looked at getting somebody to do the re-colour professionally but it was c.£750! A full retrim including door cards and rear deck lid was c.£1200. With that sort of costs, I felt I could get a good enough result @ 10-20% of the cost of a retrim.

I found a mouse house in the exhaust of my E3.... It got fired out when we started it up for the first time - the house, not the mouse!

Mart, I've got the same issue with my wiper motor as you had, so will be onto the E30zone. I've used it before, and as you say, it's very good. Just got my seats back from West Country Trimmers at Bovey Tracey. They've stitched a few seams on the front seats, but the rear needs a new central panel. I'll certainly be looking at re blacking the leather after your great results.

The wiper motor is a common problem and they can be cleaned as you have done but sometimes the corrosion has gone further but used ones are about 30-£40 the furniture polish is a good idea first suggested to me by a mate with an E21 and has a shoe shop works a treat saves cannolising but better on darker seats

I have just broken an early 325 cab that pre accident was a very nice car and I will post some pics on the next E30 Newsletter was a shame but if you need any bits let me know - the roof and leather have gone and every panel apart from boot was damaged shame as had new wings and bumpers on it before it was leant to a drink driver - good to see this thread grow and gain interest well done
