Hi

After some advice on changing my wheels for a winter trip to the Alps and thus needing some winter tyres

I’ve got a 2019 520d X Drive Touring. M Sport with the 20” wheels.

Winter tyre options are quite limited & pretty expensive for the odd ones that I can get to fit, even getting one brand to match both front & rear is tricky and none I have found are run flats like I currently have - Goodyear Eagle F1’s which is standard I think.

Front Tyres 245/35/r20
Rear Tyres 275/30/r20

I wondered would I be better getting a second set of say 18” wheels and just fitting the winter tyres to those. What complications would there be? With a thicker side wall would the new setup match (close enough to not cause problems) what’s currently on?

anyone done anything similar or got a better solution? Pics would be nice to if you have done it

TIA

I believe people normally go for a square (i.e. same tyre size all round) in a lower diameter, as 1) they ensure the xDrive system doesn't get messed up; 2) there is no problem getting matching tyres; 3) they're usually cheaper; 4) mean you simply swap whole sets of wheels back and forth without ruining your shiny larger ones in winter weather/poor road conditions.

The recommended winter size for a 2019 520d xDrive are (according to BMW) start at 17" wheels, but this may be limited by what braking set-up you have. So an 18 or 19" wheel/tyre combo may be better...19 if you have the biggest of the M brake systems.

17"
225/55r17 on a 7.5jx17 et27 wheel

18"
245/45r18 on a  on a 8jx18 et30 wheel

19"
245/40r19 on a  on a 8jx19 et30 wheel

If you don't fancy paying £2.5k for BMW wheels/tyres, then you can pick up a used set with tyres for less than £1000...

Have a look at the tyre pressure sticker on your car for the various wheel/tyre sizes that will work on your car.

Thanks for the replies

I actually came accross this website which calculates alternative size wheels & tyres and compares the difference to your original

Yes, it's a good tool, and there are many similar tools out there...but it doesn't really tell you the specific BMW-approved sizes for your car for winter wheels & tyres.

It just means you have to go through alternative sizes to check one by one...and hope the size you settle on is actually made or made by enough companies to be readily available...and that the front/rears are available in matching tyres.
