Day 2 of ''ducktail'' rear spoiler and I still really like the look it gives my car so I guess it'll be staying! What I would like is an early Motorsport roundel and I have found a company in the Midlands who can supply one for just a couple of quid.
I also want to dye the carpets and parcel shelf black. I think I will strip out the whole of the interior as I also need to modify the rear seat and clean / treat all the leather front and rear. I also have a 6 series rear that I'm thinking of fitting. The most pressing thing is a water trap that I seem to have. There is a constant drip from the rear of the nearside sill and I'm wondering where it could be blocked? Does anyone know where the drain points of the e21 shell are in detail? I think I need to solve this issue once and for all when I strip the interior out. |

Bad news. My ARB's have fallen through and despite my best efforts I just don't seem to be able to find any other suppliers. Whiteline ceased trading a while back and Ireland Engineering no longer list anything either. Next step is to try and fabricate something I think.
With the recent sunny weather I've really been enjoying the e21 and it never fails to draw some really positive comments. I know bright orange cars aren't for everyone but there's just something about it on a sunny day. For those of you with highly polished alloy wheels, I have discovered a wonderful product that protects the alloy and stops it tarnishing. Usually, it's a matter of a few days before they start looking dull again. Especially the front where the brake dust settles. The photo below was taken after a full week of regular driving.
I treated them with ''Wheel Guard'' from http://spautopia.co.uk/default.aspx and the results have been excellent. I did try the different waxes etc, that exists but none of them have been very good really. This stuff takes a bit more effort to apply but they do say that nothing worth having comes easy! I'll submit a full write up on the product to the magazine. I also know they'll do a good price to club members. |

I took the e21 for a blast down to Gurston Down in Wiltshire today and watched the hillclimb event. Excellent entertainment. I've also decided to have a go in the e21 at some point.
Another 200 mile round trip where the car never missed a beat and it was great fun through some of the best roads Wiltshire has to offer. Add the glorious weather into the mix and it makes for quite a day. There were some great cars to be seen too and I'll post some photos soon. |

I decided to do something to improve the sounds in the e21 today. I had already fitted JBL 6x4's all round in an attempt to try and improve things but there has always been a distinct lack of bass. The solution was a Pioneer sub and a Mutant amp bought for a tenner as it never worked. One new fuse later and we have life! Well a little green power-on light anyway. Half hour of ''hide the speaker wire'' and the sound is transformed. I do like a bit of 70's funk and having no bass spoils it slightly. I even made sure to mount the amp on the sub enclosure so that I can easily whip it out at track days etc.
I've also discovered this little trick that Alpina did to tighten things up at the front. I'll be asking the guys to do the same to my car when it goes in next week for the brake upgrade.

Well I just spent a couple of hours detailing my car ready for tomorrows 'Drive it Day' event with the 2002 guys. 3 of us are meeting at the end of my road in Richmond Park before heading up to Newport Pagnell and the main rendezvous. Then it's a B road blast up to Silverstone. I know I'm biased but my car looks great and is such a joy to drive in the sunshine. Sadly they now forecast heavy showers for tomorrow. Fingers crossed that they're wrong and it stays fine! Anyway, hopefully I will have a whole host of pictures to share after we get back.

Yesterdays DiD event put on by the 02 guys was another success and great fun. The final country lane blast to the pub for a Sunday roast was most enjoyable. Looking forward to the next one!

Just realised that we must have covered well over 250 miles yesterday with some being driven in shall we say ''spirited'' fashion? Yet again the e21 never missed a beat and was a real blast to drive. I could do with spending a bit more time playing with the settings on the Gaz coilovers but generally the handling was excellent and it rode the lanes well with plenty of compliance. I still want to improve the ARB's though and hopefully a solution will be found pretty soon. I find it pretty hard to fault my car though.

I think they let me join in cos they know I've had 10 or 11 02's over the years!
We won't mention that the e21 had to tow-start one of their cars though. I mean that would be cruel wouldn't it?

I've just been gifted a hottuning 6 branch manifold from an e30 325i. I've had conflicting reports about fitting it to an e21 but as it was free, I don't mind chopping it about a bit in the hope that it might be persuaded to fit. If anyone can shed any light on this, I'd like to hear from them?

Seems the hottuning manifold will need extensive modification. It's been suggested that the first 6 inches will make a good basis for fabrication of the rest. Once it arrives, I'm going to take it down to a guy I know with a mandrel pipe bender etc. Fingers crossed we can solve it between us.
Practical Performance Car magazine came out yesterday. It's a nice clinic feature with my car. Anyway, I'm off out later to get the Toyo's fitted for the weekend. Fingers crossed the rain stays away and doesn't spoil the event at Duxford on Sunday. |

Fitted the Toyos and my car feels very different on the road. If I'm honest, I'm actually pretty shocked that there should be such a dramatic difference in feel. It's not as if the tyres I took off were rubbish. I have yet to push them to their limit but if first impressions are anything to go by, I'm in for a treat!

UPS came today.
Quick rack - good timing as the standard one needs new rubbers etc anyway.
I've got a poly bush for the steering joint.
Also, got this brace for between the front ARB mounts. Just going to paint enamel black before bolting on with the poly bushes throughout the car.
Decided to make a start on the remaining parts of my interior that need to be dyed black. Parcel shelf looks way better.
Carpet will be next along with finally fitting my rear headrests. 8) |

Well, for one reason or another, a few months have passed since I was last able to update this thread. There has been a fair bit of progress with my car though, so here goes!
Firstly, the guys at RPM fitted the new hi-ratio steering rack and 'wonder bar' along with K-mac roller bearing top-mounts. The result has been much more precise steering but without it being at all nervous or twitchy. The 'wonder-bar' has helped immensely and all sign of shimmy has been removed. Excellent. I can see why Alpina were so keen to fit this mod to their own cars. I have also got my new brakes fitted in the shape of Volvo 4 pots and EBC Greenstuff pads. The whole conversion is pretty straightforward and well covered on various forums and offers a vast improvement over stock. I had considered going with Wilwoods but the bespoke caliper brackets cost twice the price of the whole Volvo conversion and I'm on a tight budget. I must admit, the Wilwoods do look pretty trick though and they're a fair bit lighter too. Maybe once the lottery numbers come up I'll swap? I'm still working my way through the car and replacing all the bushes I can with items from Super Flex. Finally, I have nearly finished getting my new engine ready to be dropped in. It's a 2.7 that's been built up from scratch and blueprinted with a Schrick cam. The chap who built it, Matt Durys, was a big fan of all things automotive and the engine was going to power his e21 as a track car. He also owned a TVR Griffith 500 so he knew a thing or two about quick cars! Sadly Matt died aged just 37 as a result of cancer. Matt obviously knew how to put a quick engine together though as the dyno sheet shows it made 198bhp whilst still running the old K-jet injection! Now that's none too shabby. I have decided to bin the K-jet though and run a MAF with Motronic and a live remap. I'm hoping this will find me a bit closer to 220bhp with a healthy lump of torque. If all goes to plan, the engine will be in next week and I'll run it in gently for a few hundred miles before I get it back on the dyno again. Finally, I found myself a set of magnesium Panasport split-rims which should look rather nice once fitted. I've nearly finished polishing them and all I need are some new tyres and for my finger tips to grow back! I'm without my car this week as it's in for paint where I damaged the Alpina front spoiler. The offside wing buckled slightly too, so that's being sorted along with a brand new front bumper. I'm still getting over the cost of the bumper when you consider it wasn't that long ago that BMW was selling them off at £150 in an effort to get rid of their stocks. Today, a complete e21 front bumper will set you back £770.00! Thank goodness for insurance! Anyway, pictures..... Matt Durys and his TVR.
I have set up a regular payment to cancer research as a mark of respect to Matt and I like to think he would approve of where his hard work has ended up! Panasport split rims. ![]() ![]()

Just spent an hour taking apart my new wheels and breaking them down into their 3 parts. I cannot believe how light they are compared to normal alloys! The out rims have been sent off to be machine polished. I could get quite a nice finish by hand but there were a couple of bits of kerb rash I wanted removed. I'm going to re-tap the threads on the centres so that the new bolts can be torqued properly and new neoprene seals are on order along with anodized bolts. Hopefully, they'll be ready for me to fit once the new engine is in towards the end of next week. I'm still searching for some new centre caps although BBS ones might fit along with new BMW caps.
No news on the repaint yet although it's supposed to be ready on Monday in time for me to drop it over to Dave for the engine to go in. The new spigot bearing has been fitted along with cambelt, water-pump etc. I'm considering these injectors... http://www.fiveomotorsport.com/fuel-injectors/bmw Just wondered if anyone had any experience of them? |

Decided to get myself a vernier to optimise things with the Schrick cam when my car goes for a live re-map. I was making pretty good power without one but I think it's good sense to fit one while I have the chance. I'm not sure if there's any one brand that's better than another though so I guess some research is in order.
I know one thing for certain though. I don't want to be without my car for very much longer. Since the end of May I've only had a couple of weeks use of it. Once it comes back from paint on Monday its straight over to RPM for the 2.7 but then that's it for a while. There's still stuff I want to do but I can do it here myself - I think. One of the jobs I can do is to fit the modular ICE I got at Gaydon from Pat Tremain. I think it's pretty much period for an e21 and once it's had the head unit converted to accept my i-pod, it should be pretty sweet.
I remeber when hi-fi's were nothing without a ''graphic''
Pair of matching speakers
This is the finish my split rims should end up with and have opted to copy the gold bolts too.

Well, my car is back from paint and back to looking it's pretty self again. The spoiler no longer has a chunk missing and the sticky backed plastic repair is no more. I also have a brand new front bumper which was stupidly expensive but covered by my insurance.
Tomorrow it's off to RPM and hopefully my 2.7 is all ready to drop in this time?! The new spigot bearing is in place and a full Motronic set-up will replace the aged K-jet. One other problem is a weeping brake caliper. I have been offered a complete Wilwood set-up at just the right time it would seem! If I fit those, along with my split-rims, I should lose a significant amount of weight from my car and end up with E36 M3 levels of power to weight. I think the time has come to replace the Proxes with 888r's too. |

Well, fingers crossed my car will be back with me by this time next week! I guess I'm lucky I still have the tii to smoke around in but I do miss my e21. Sad isn't it?
The wheels are due back from the polishers on Tuesday but from what I have seen so far, they're going to look stunning. In fact, they look to good to stay on the car all winter so I might have to find myself some 15'' steels. Mazda MX5 ones look great when they've been banded but a) they're not cheap and b) I bet the offset is way off what I would need. I have everything I need to drop the new engine in and that includes a couple of different ECU chips to try. One in an Alpina B7 map I believe and the other comes from Ant @ A-tech. I am confident that I should see about 200bhp on the dyno though although a bit more would be nice. My goal is 220 and I think that's a realistic goal to set. I have also been offered a set of Wilwood Powerlite brake calipers so they are going to replace the Volvo set-up along with EBC greenstuff pads. I have always found them to be a good pad with minimal brake dust coating my alloys. Combined with the Magnesium alloys, I should have saved myself quite a bit of unsprung weight which will obviously benefit handling. Anyway, roll on next Friday. |

Well the wheels are back and look fantastic. Apologies for poor pics but you get the idea.
The car comes back today and I am so looking forward to the extra torque of a 2.7. Added to that, I am off to see a hens tooth this evening.
I got some new gauges to keep a close eye on the 2.7 too. I think they should fit right in and have a nice period look about them.

Well it seems they didn't machine quite deep enough for the hubs so the wheels need a bit more work. The Toyos won't be here till mid-week anyway.
The 2.7 is a peach and the performance has certainly jumped a step. I have got a very slight misfire though so new plugs are needed. Any suggestions for the most suitable? |

Finally got the ARB's on along with some decent rubber. ARB's have made quite a difference and car certainly seems flatter through the corners. Apart from a few interior jobs to do, the orange car is finally finished. I think...
My car developed a bit of a misfire last night so I decided to check the plugs. Discovered Bosch super 4's or whatever they call them in Max Power, so ditched them in favour of NGK BRP6ES. Although a bit better, the misfire is still there under load so my local motor factors ordered me a new set of leads. £34 plus VAT seems pretty reasonable but they won't be here till morning. Anyway, whilst have a poke around I discovered a poor connection that seemed to cure it but I 'm going to fit the new leads anyway.
While I was out the front ARB turned up too! I'm going to try and get my car finished by Santa Pod and then just enjoy it.
My car's in here too, with Dave from E21 Revival. Supposed to be out Thursday but some shops get it early or you can download it to your phone.
