Hi Everyone,
My E24 635 CSi Highline has factory standard metric BMW cross spoke alloys fitted with Michelin TRX 245/45 ZR 415 tyres which I want to keep. But I am looking for imperial alternate alloys and tyres for everyday use, any advice on best/suitable size of alloys & tyres would be very welcome. Plus what to look for when sourcing alternates and any suppliers you can recommend. Thanks, Karl |

Hi
Can i ask why you want another set of wheels instead of driving on the TRX? these TRX are fantastic tyres, and the only problem people have with them is that they are such good tyres they can end up getting old. I would suggest not sharing the usage over more than one set of tyres. some great news for early 6 series owners. Pirelli have made the 195/70VR14 Cinturato CN36 again for you guys untill now there hasn't been a proper classic tyre in this size. If yoiu end up going 16" then Pirelli make a P7 which will work well. They are a radial tyre that works well along with geometry that is set up for TRX. But just fit TRX and keep you tyre the way BMW intended. Dougal Longstone Tyres

Only the UK E24's had the TRX as standard fit. Elsewhere in Europe from early 1988 the standard wheel was the 15 inch BBS Style 5 from the E34 5 Series but with 225/55x15 tyres - the E34 used 225/60x15.
Having experienced the Dreaded TRX when they were new, I wouldn't want them now for serious all year use. Whilst they may have suited some cars, they gave very unpredictable wet weather grip not helped by the rear suspension camber change. Cresting a hill and then an immediate bend required razor sharp reflexes. I had a few 'JESUS!' moments in 635CSi's and M535i E28's. Switching to a good imperial tyre such as a regular Michelin or Goodyear improved them dramatically. TRX's are okay for a dry weather show pony.

I must say that is the complete polar opposite to my experience.
My Dad had a 535 in about 2005. We took the 16" wheels off it and put it back on 220/55R390 TRX and it massively improved its ride and handling no end, and I thrashed the pants off that poor car, (obvs when my dad wasn't looking.) Also i would like to say the customers we have who restore cars to standard fitting TRX tyres are always very happy with the results. I often think that rumours about exotic tyres like the TRX are driven by a resentment toward the cost and the inability to fit a buget tyre on the extra ordinary wheels. A curse that some of Michelins top tyres suffer from is because they last sdo long they often find themselves still fitted to a tyre years after the rubber was at its best. did they not fit TRX as standard in France and Germany? I beleive the early E24 fitted 195/70R14? |
