Next I turned my attension to the silver rear panel. Now, I was slightly smug that I had secured a very cheap new, old stock replacement all the way fro Germany, via eBay.de. So, I spent an hour cleaning and polishing a few odd storage marks and it was mint;

However, Iwhen I offered it up to the car it was clearly wrong..... It was for the E3 alright, but a later one, I think, with larger rear lights... doh!

Therefore, I cleaned up the old panel and stuck that on. It is not mint, but is in good useable condition, especially after a polish;

Hinged rear number plate/filler flap fitted;

Silver panel cleaned and fitted to the filler flap too;

Frustrating, but not a disaster. Anybody want a late E3 rear panel?

On recent searches of the internet for parts, I came across a full red leather trim with door cards, head rests and centre consol for £200 - a bargain! I snapped it up and am really pleased as whilst it is not perfect it is exceptional for a 35+ year old trim. Plus, my car has a tired, but servicable, cloth trim, so I was pleased to find this;

The rear head rests have holes already in the shelf;

But, the locating brackets are missing as my car did not have any, so I'll get my fabricator buddy to weld some tube of the correct diameter onto some flat plate and we can mount them onto the predrilled holes which already have captive nuts;

I've also started making a rear parcel shelf cover which is being fashion out of an E30 coupe shelf, which will cover the rear seatbelts (from same E30) and also the speakers. I know it sounds very DIY, but I assure you it will look almost factory.

That's it for now, I'll be back on it at the weekend.

Cheers,

Martin.

The headrests that came with the new leather interior needed mounts fabricated to allow them to be fitted, as they were missing from the car, as it didn't have them as standard;

Deano, the resident fabricator, made some suitable mounts today;

I think they'll do the job!

Trail fitted the rear seat and headrests to get the height of the brackets correct - they were spot on!

I'm loving the red leather!

I have fitted the rear seatbelts out of my mates trackday E30 coupe that he is building, as the old BMW didn't have any. They mount on the rear shelf, as in the E30 and the shelf has been reinforced with welded plate, etc. They look a bit ugly, so I have been working on modifying the E30 parcel shelf as it covered the belt reals and has neat covers for the belts to emerge from. The shelf fitted side to side but was too wide to fit between the rear glass and back of the seat. So I have been busy with the jigsaw and no-more-nails. It will be trimmed in black accoustic carpet and the holes will be covered so the speakers will be hidden too. I know it all looks a bit Blue Peter, but I am hopeful it will look almost factory when finished.

Also, ordered an bunch of seals/gaskets, trim fixings, etc today from the Classic BMW Parts chaps in Germany - man-alive, they know how to charge!

Cheers,

Martin.

Had another few hours on the car. Concentrated on the front indicators - as that was the next thing out the box. Spent an hour cleaning and polishing - I ended up with several sets as a spare pair came with the car and another pair from the guy I bought the replacement engine off. All were used and so I have chosen the 'best' pair, once cleaned;

They almost look brand new!

Wiring loom routed back through bulkhead and into engine bay;

Plugged in and ready to go;

Also been continuing work on the 'shelf;

Had to cut some card to fit the missing pieces at the ends.

Taking shape - fibreglass to strengthen the underside;

Almost there and ready for covering in acoustic carpet.

Some new bits arived too - various gaskets, body fittings, seals, etc, plus new headlamps;

Spending the day on the car tomorrow - more to follow!

Cheers,

TC.

Spent the day on the car yesterday and was all on my own in the workshop for most of the day, so got loads done - well, I say loads....

Anyway, onto my car, I fitted the rear panel insert with double sided tape and Tiger Seal;

Trimmed the double sided tape and sorted the new gasket seals for the rear laps. A dab of Tiger Seal to hold them in place and a smear of Vaseline to assist assembly and it all went together rather well;

Next up I fitted the rear C pillar trims, new trim clips required;

More fiddling required to get the rear shelf to fit.

Original seat belt covers from the E30, which donated the shelf, fit perfectly and give the OEM look;

I then marked the holes and cut the holes for the headrests. They fit nicely after a little tweak;

Need to get some accoustic carpet and cover the self to finish it off.

Mart.

Turned my attention to the headlamps next. I picked up some replacement lens units and so stripped the old units down for refurbishment - they were in a right state;

Cleaned them up on the bench grinder wire wheel and some scotch pads, treated the rust and gave them a coat of primer;

Spent the rest of the afternoon polishing the chrome headlamp retaining rings, they were covered in years of crud too;

Then Deano (the welder) turned up to annoy me, so I got nothing else done on the car - but drank loads of tea, talked bollocks, cleaned the workshop and shifted the cars about;

That's all for now folks!

Cheers,

TC.

Progress.......

Headlamp bezels get a few coats of satin black;

Started on the steering too. The steering arms were cleaned up with the wire wheel on the bench grinder, along with the steering idler. They were then etch primed and painted BMW Jet Black. The adjusters were re-zinc'd, along with the fittings. New track-rod ends;

The steering box was given the refurb treatment too - hung to dry before refitting;

Cheers,

TC.

Spent the day at the 'shop today. Limited progres between 10 and 12 as too many distractions and excuses to drink tea and talk sh*t....  but got a few hours alone this afternoon to concentrate!

Boot hinges refitted - they were a fiddle as they are connected to each side by some torsion bar effort;

I appreciate that some parts of the boot don't have a great paint job, but the entire boot is fitted out with trims, etc, so you won't see the sides or wheel tubs, etc.

Then spent time completing the build up of the headlamps;

Cleaned up the adjusters in some petrol, worked a treat!

The adjusters came up really well!

Freshly re-zinc'd fittings reattached;

Headlamps test fitted;

Complete set test fitted;

Grilles offered up for effect - need cleaning, etc - but actually look good in the pis;

All good stuff!

TC.

Oh, god-damn, blast and bugger it!

I've just noticed that I have mounted the side/headlamps on the inside and the spot/main beam on the outside... i.e the wrong way round!

What a cock!

Oh well, another 30 mins to rectify.....

Hi There.

The E3 is one of my alltime favourites, but unfortunately, i can't afford to have one now, due to my E30 resto and also because I have no garage!
Your restoration project is excellent and is the proof that with a elbow crease, dedication, smart thinking and fiends help, everything can be achieved.
I'll be looking forward for more updates.

The rear panel trim you got is for a very early car with the wider rear lights - I don't think there are any in the UK.
Ebay.de was the best place for it!

Looking good though!

Posted on behalf of Martin who can't post at the moment:

Hello, hello!

Lost a few weeks in October and November, but have cought up in December. I ended up with 11 days holiday left at the end of the year, so took a week of in December and had time off between Christmas and New Year, so things have progressed.

Steering box fitted;

Throttle linkage refurbished and refitted;

The decided to look at the interior - off the ramp, doors open;

Hoovered the floors ready for sound deadening to be fitted;

Re-wrapped the wiring loom throughout the car;

Painted repairs to rear wheel arches, which were completed some time ago, but needed a coat of paint to protect;

Scotchbrited, etch primed - then painted BMW Jet Black - forgot to take a pic...

Last year when I undersealed the car I injected all the box sections with a copious amount of wax protection. The only items left to do was the doors - I have not waxed the inside of the doors as I did not want the wax to affect the Bodyshop doing the paint as the doors have drain holes in the bottom and the wax would get potentially thoruogh and contaminate the painted surfaces during prep. So, the kit came out once more to fill the doors;

That should keep the rust at bay!  :thumb:

More to follow!

Cheers,

Martin.

Wiper motor and cover refitted;

Then started fitting sound deadening to the inside of the car - debated this for a long time as the car was not fitted with much in the way of sound deadening, and I want it to be a comfortanble car to drive long distances, so I took the decision to apply Dynamat to the entire interior of the car;

I need to take some more photo's of the completed job - easy to apply and will hopefully make a significant difference.
On to the engine!
Had big problems getting the crank bolt out - it was seized solid and we ended up welding a peice of metal to the block to stop the flywheel turning. Then managed to break a lever bar and a socket trying to get it loose. Eventually after heat treatment and sveral blasts with the socket on the air gun it came free;

The engine build has come on well and is almost complete and ready to reinstall;

Tidied up the gearbox and diff - cleaned them up with the wire wheel on the drill, etch primer and paint;

I hand painted the diff in smooth silver hamerite, but the finish wasn't great, so I sprayed it gloss black - much better!

Loads more to update, but no more pictures....
Loads more to do too!
Cheers,
Mart.

Hi,

Finished the Dynamat ready for the new carpet to go in;

Then finished my 'Blue Peter' rear shelf, which I fashioned from a cut-down BMW E30 325i shelf (donated, along with rear seat belts by Rob, thnaks!), I covered the shelf in accoustic carpet and used spray adhesive - it went rather well and I think the finished product looks quite OEM;

Then the carpet started to go in. I bought a new, reproduction carpet from a company in Germany - a full kit, to original spec, all the various peices, to the correct sizes, with all the bindings, etc. It's a really nicely made carpet set - for a Left Hand Drive car.....  what a dummy, the front carpets don't fit! Thankfully the guys in Germany have taken my old RHD carpets and are making replacements for me, so a slight delay, but no drama....

Cheers,

Mart

Then came the brake rebuild....

Having acquired a set of CSL callipers, I had them refurbished by BiggRed in Worcester. The Callipers came with a new looking set of ventilated discs and pads;

I painted the bells, so they don't corode, a couple of coats were needed;

Pulled all the handbrake shoe parts and adjuster out of the storage bags and worked out how they all fit together - it's been over 18 months since I took it apart - gave them a good clean up and fitted them up;

The rear hubs/discs on my Saloon version must be slightly different to the Coupe (CSL) version as the rear disc will not sit flush on the hub, so requires an 8mm spacer, between the hub and the back of the disc, which I have ordered and will fit this weekend. That kind of stopped work at the back, as I couldn't fit the callipers without the discs fitted. So, it was onto the front end;

Rather strangly the front discs fit behind the hub - I'd clearly forgotten this since taking it apart and had refitted the hubs to get the car rolloing over a year ago - So, we have to carefully remove the hubs/bearings and fit the discs;

So, what's next?

Radiator has been re-cored after failing a pressure test - it has had a greater number of 'row's fitted that original in a dual-core arrangement at the same width as the original - I understand this will be far more efficient.

Brake & Clutch Master Cylinders - New replacements will be fitted to the bulkhead along with the assosiated plumbing and new replacement twin servo's.

Then, the fully built up engine can go in! I'm seriously considering buying new replacement twin Weber carbs as the Solex originals are crap, I am led to believe, so not wanting to waste my money on refurbishing the old one, only for them to be a complete pain, I might have to bite the bullet.

Once the RHD carpet turns up I can get that in and then get the leather seats in and centre consoles, etc.

There's much more that that to do.... bumpers, brake and fuel plumbing, electrics, glass.....

Better get on with it!!!

Mart.

URGENT, URGENT, URGENT!

My plan with the 3.0Si/CSL rear brakes has not worked - fitting the spacer means that you lose too much of the wheel bolt thread to be safe and the hub is not then deep enough to locate in the wheel hub, so it won't centrally locate.

It turns out that the 3.0Si/CSL rear hub is deeper than the 2500 hub.

So, I have two choices;

1)Change back to standard 2500 rear brakes (unventilated) which means I will have to get my old callipers refurbished.

2) Replace the rear hubs for 3.0Si/CSL versions.

I would prefer option 2. So, does anybody know where I can get a pair of 3.0Si/CSL hubs - I only need the outer part?

Please help....?

Cheers,

Martin.

Right chaps, i've been soooo busy on the car, not had time to update you all on progress - and there has been lots!

I have a self imposed deadline of 3rd June to have the car ready to drive back to the BMW factory in Munich, so 4 weeks to have it finished, MoT'd, tuned, etc, etc.

So, progress has been made!

Continued with the interior trim and carpet, etc;

Seat Belts fitted;

Cleaned and treated the dash to bring the shine back;

Front door cards are now fitted, following the installation of vapour barrier.

More, much more to follow....

Cheers,

Martin.

Next was prepping the engine bay ready for the installation of the fresh motor.

Had to get the brake master cylinder, clutch master cylinder, brake servo's and hoses fitted - much easier whilst the engine is out;

This is what came off the car - what a mess! Well, we won't be using any of it - just for reference;

Clutch Master Cylnder refubished;

New Brake Master Cylinder;

Rear Brake Compensator Valve refurbished and repainted;

Replacement aftermarket brake servo's fitted;

Brake and Clutch Master Cylinders Fitted;

Plumbing with freshly made braided hoses;

Expansion Tank mounted in correct position;

Rear Brake Compensator Valve fitted;

Clutch Slave hose fitted and ready for flex braided line;

Front Brake Lines grommeted through inner wing;

The front brake lines and fitting, whilst copied in braided hoses, directly match the factory set-up and routing.

Very pleased with the bake installation, neat, tidy and factory looking.

There are so many parts to refurbish and paint before they go back on the car - just a few examples;

PAS Res;

Prop Shaft & Seat Belts;

I must have prepped and painted upwards of 50 odd parts, it's taken hours and hours.....

Various plastic parts have been through the dishwasher to bring them back to life - very effective - my wife is generally unhappy about having car parts in the dissy though....!
