   I am currently looking for a BMW to replace my daily runner and have seen an advert for a 95/96 323i with 100k on the clock and spoken to the owner for some initial information.

Having never owned a "nikasil coated bore" BMW engine my first question was regarding whether the car has had a replacement engine, oil consumption etc....

The owner could not confirm any warranty work but did admit that the car was burning roughly 1 litre every 800-1200 miles.

To me this rang warning bells and I am wondering whether this is indeed the nikasil issue showing its head again.  Indeed, my last E34 518i even at 157k miles only used at the very most 0.25 to 0.5 litres in 6,000 miles.  

I would greatly appreciate your thoughts and advice.
