E90 330D Auto Power Loss

   2010, 161000 miles. It runs perfectly fine and sounds all ok but when I get to 3700rpm in second the power suddenly disappears and drops back quite suddenly. In higher gears it doesn't suddenly drop back but runs out of steam in each gear at about 3700rpm (redline is about 4700). Ultimately it stops accelerating and tops out at 125. So far my mechanic has tried disconnecting the swirl flaps which made no difference, replaced the fuel filter which made no difference and cleaned the fuel heat pump as much as one can. He still thinks it is the swirl flaps and is going to install a swirl flap delete kit. There appears to be only one error code: P2016 which is the intake manifold position sensor/switch circuit low bank 1I did read of somebody having apparently very similar symptoms and the fuel heat pump was the answer. 
I am way out of my depth here so if anybody has any thoughts I would be very grateful/
