On another forum, I picked up a post about failing vanos seals, which a firm in USA have addressed, and made a seal kit to rebuild your own single or twin vanos unit. They have used a different O ring material, which they say is far better than the BM supplied seal material, and lasts far longer.

They say that when the seals go, you can get noise, lumpy idle, poor low speed power, but a definite improvement at around 3,000 rpm, and poor fuel consumption. Well my M52 single vanos engine displays all of these symptoms - except for the lumpy idle, so I am interested in this repair kit.

The firm is called Beisan Systems - www.beisansystems.com , which makes interesting reading. Has anyone in the club any experience of doing this?

It seems very surprisng that I have not seen any other mention of this problem on any buying guides on BM's, as it appears to be common, and more importantly why havent BMW done something about using the same seal material?? Maybe the club should consider buying in these seal kits for members.

There is another USA firm called Dr Vanos - www.drvanos.com, who do reconditioned vanos units with the new seals, and if you believe their blurb, they recondition the units to a higher standard than the BMW supplied recon ones!! The biggest downside to Dr Vanos, is that there is a surcharge pending return of your old unit, and all the carriage each way, possible customs duty etc. makes this expensive.

I am very surprised that no-one has commented on this issue, as I would have thought that it was quite important. I have ordered one of these kits, which I shall get fitted to my 523 (M52 engine), I will post the results in due course.

Another post where I may be too late - I installed one of these kits perhaps 18 months ago and it cured the stalling at cold idle that plagued my E46 328i. I didn't have any of the other symptoms.

The instructions are very good and it did what it said on the tin. Well worth $60.
