    Posted: 29 Dec 2009 at 4:09pm
Hi everyone,

A"key"event in 2010 to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the E21 is critical in raising the profile of this forgotten car...this"key"event should include as many cars as possible - there enough members with E21s to achieve this.

The proposal for our key event is that it should be celebrated within the headline BMW Car Club event at Gaydon and I am optimistic enough to believe we should be able to gather at least 35 cars (more welcome) from both within and without the club memberhip.

We have magazine interest and everyone attending and displaying an E21 will receive a souvenir certificate and a commemorative badge. If more than 35 cars attend these will receive the badge, as the display will be for 35 cars.

Details will be needed in advance of all those wishing to attend (together with details of their cars).

Help on this project would be welcome to ensure that it is successful, when last I attempted something less ambitious there was no interest.

I look forward to your feedback.

Jon.

Jon - how would this work at Gaydon as I believe the current planned focal display is the classic register which includes the E21...also from previous experience you need to be careful regards non members as registers have had burnt fingers in the past as members should have preference....but if you can get 35 members and get a good display area it should be impressive - if you can send each registered member with an E21 a letter then you will soon find out the level of attendance and interest...Good luck Neil

Hi Neil.

I do appreciate your comments...I have run this by club office and have approval: next step as you suggest is to contact all club members with E21s. You are absolutely right, members have and should have preference...as I would like to include E21 owners who are not currently in the club - the way to do this is to get them on board in the club: something that is currently being worked on.

I would like this"key"event and any others to be inclusive not exclusive, as I believe this is the best way to move the E21 forward: factionalism has to be avoided - I'm love E21s but dislike politics and coteries.

Let's all have a great 2010.

I must have been told the wrong information regards Gaydon...whilst I agree with you saying that events should be inclusive - speaking as a person who has regularly involved other clubs, forums etc and also have an open door policy for our local branch meet - I am aware of the need for people to be paid up members for shows like Gaydon as it can cause offence if people dont pay to be a member and then show their car, whilst paid up members are told there is no space on their region or register display etc....so its not coteries but in any club unfortunately there will be politics and the club dont wish to lose members - so all I was saying was to be aware - good luck

It'll be interesting to see just how many owners respond. I never realised there were so many e21's in the club! Especially when you consider how few are seen at shows etc.
I'm not interested in the politics but I am aware of the fact that a lot of active e21 owners are not club members and this is for a variety of reasons. Obviously, members should be given priority and I would hope, that successful e21 events, will encourage membership to increase.
I am also currently in contact with Tiff Needell as I am trying to research the old BMW County Championship. As a past owner of a 323i also, what do people think of the idea of inviting him along to Gaydon?

Tiff could be an interesting guest...certainly the easiest to get of the many
now very famous* drivers that competed in the County Championship - thirty years ago!!! He makes decent money as an after dinner speaker so will probably want a fee. Let me know.

The issue of response has been frustrating for a long time...people either want to participate or they do not. When I took on the Register there was no information on cars in the club; I therefore had to create a spreadsheet of members cars and the details of them.

Cheers.

Glad to read both John and Mark are fully committed to the e21 register and will keep an eye on the timely growth of comms on here due to their enthusiasm / commitment to the cause.

All.

2010 could be a successful year for the E21 within the BMWCC, but a team effort is required to ensure we get the leverage not only for the events in planning but for the vitality of the Register going forward.

We need a co-ordinated effort and need to develop in parallel a number of events that excite the E21 owning members - encouraging participation: this should encourage E21 owning non-members to join the BMWCC.

My goal is that we have a vibrant Register, that, and I've said this many times in the past, that promotes the most overlooked, and arguably one of the most important BMWs ever manufactured.

Yet the E21 is still the Cinderella car.

I hope this year she'll go to the ball!

Regards.

If I'm honest, I think you are going to struggle to get 35 cars to commit to Gaydon and non members are only going to join the Club if they are going to benefit from doing so. The majority of UK e21 enthusiasts are to be found on e21.net or, more recently, e21.ownforum and in recent months interest has started to grow. However, it is early days and it might be prudent to take things slowly. The fact is, there are many, many more e30's on the roads and so they are more likely to achieve recognition in the media. They are also the model that the majority of 'Jo Public' attach to the BMW boom years back in the 80's, along with stripe shirts and the filofax. I feel personally, that for the time being anyway, the e21 would benefit from nailing it's flag to the 02 or e30 mast, as a way of gaining recognition. Once there are enough active e21 enthusiasts to warrant it, maybe then the e21 could then stand alone?

Obviously, this is my own personal view and nothing more.

Mark,

I am a little more optimistic. However, I did discover a post from you on another forum about Gaydon and having 35 cars there...this appeared after a similar post from myself on this site!

I'm told you want to help the Register, if this is still the case it would be a good idea if we were to meet up for a chat - hopefully I have a suggestion that may interest you.

This should be a small but vibrant Register and I am certainly not naive enough to think this will happen overnight.

I am some distance from your location, but am prepared to meet somewhere suitable for us both - I am prepared to do the lion's share of the distance.

If you could give this some thought...there are currently 57 BMWCC members recorded as owning an E21...there will be a +/- % either way as we have to rely on members advising us when they either sell or acquire an E21 - I also note that you were not a Register member!

I am wary of promoting"other Forums"on the BMWCC Forum unless there is a quid pro quo. My view is we should promote the E21, the Register, the club and the forum, along of course with membership for current owners who are non-members..

These are a couple of the points I would like to discuss, I'll call you today to arrange a meet.

Regards.

Hi, I would have been happy to lend a hand when, for whatever reason, you couldn't be contacted, as I felt it was important that there were someone as a point of contact, but now that your at the helm again, I don't really have the time to commit. I'm happy to help you contact other owners etc, although you can probably do just as well via other forums. I shall continue to do what I can to champion the e21 cause and have recently written some magazine features that should be in print soon.

As for 'promoting' of other forums, I was merely pointing out that the majority of the more 'enthusiastic' e21 owners frequent these sites and as such, it would be an uphill battle to encourage them to come here. I don't say that to put the car club down, I just feel that is the reality unless there is something to attract them. I would suggest you PM the UK e21 owners, that can be contacted online, and ask for their input / feedback.

Despite the 57 registered e21 owners in the BMWCC e21's are seldom represented at any of the National shows. Gaydon last year had 3 or 4 I think. Hopefully, those CC members that do own an e21 can be encouraged to attend more events in 2010 so that more e21's are actually present at events.

Good luck with it all anyway.

Some interesting thourghts here and would hope Mark, you do take up the offer to meet Jon and discuss all things e21 and find both common ground aswell as areas which either one or the other has greater interest.
With regards the BMWCC Register then it is important to promote each to stand alone wherever possible and given the e21s I hope this will survive OK.
Probably perculiar to BMWs there seems to be a forum (or more) for each and every E-number which in many ways is great for on-line, immediatacy etc BUT do remember the CarClub always offers MORE, particularly if one opens up to all things BMW..just look at Gaydon.
Do, by all means extend invite to non-members from forums etc but remember to focus on those already in the club by pushing out regular slots within the Register pages of the mag. on both car related techie things and the social side.
I shall keep watching on here and speak to Jon periodically to hopefully hear how its going. steveH

All a bit odd really.

There are loads of E21 owners in the UK, most hang out on Jeroens forum.

I have a baur mid resto - may be working in a month or two, plus the famous track slug (ex Nick Wright) I have had 3 other e21's, a green 1977 320 when I lived in Australia, a 316 that got scrapped and a 1983 316 that is somewhere in the Manchester area having been sold on by the guy I sold it to. I quite like the things.

I tried to contact the E21 register man about 4 years ago, got no reply.

Someone claiming to be him popped up recently, but has gone quiet again.

He wanted to buy some wheels I have, but I haven't managed to sort the tyre removal yet, so haven't been able to sort that deal. My fault.

Last I heard he was going on holiday for a week, but that was last year i think.

I'll gladly find a way to bring my track e21 to a show - if Nick does Harewood to coincide with Croft again that's guaranteed, going to Gaydon is a bit far, I may end up taking a scruffy track car to Tatton if Jeff will have it. But could the e21 register LEADER please come back out of the woodwork. It's an important anniversary and it needs something to happen.
