Hi,

I've bought an E3 2500 to restore;

But, where are all the E3 owners?

Where do I 'belong' on the forum?

Is there an E3 register?

If you have an E3 and want to contact me, do so via here or bell me on the number below.

Cheers,

Martin.

The E3 register was (maybe still is) run by Nigel Gibb. He got a bit annoyed because none of the E3 owners were supporting him but there are very few around.
That looks to be a worthwhile project - is it very rusty? I had a 3.0S around 10 years ago (PGN34L) but it was very rotten underneath when i got rid of it. A guy in Reading has it along with various other ancient BMW's and tons of spares.

RHD E3's have the dreadful twin servo braking system which should be removed and binned. If yours has been stood for any time the servos will be knackered and you can't buy them new. Forget about reconditioning them, it doesn't work.
Your options are either a pair of MGB Lockheed servos (around £300 a pair) or find a late E12 525/528i and rob it of it's single vacuum servo set up.

Thanks for the response Andrew, much appreciated. I'll try and contact Nigel Gibb.

I'm aware that E3's are fairly rare, well very rare, but I thought this might be the place enthusiastic E3 owners congregated....

It's not too rusty. I knew it had some rot in the rear lower quarter panels and in the boot. It is worse that we thought, but could have been much, much worse. One of my buddies is a top welder, so he has replaced the rear lower quarters, rear panel and the double skinned lip of both rear wheel arches, plus fabricating some replacement panels for inside the boot - basically any rot has been cut out and replaced with fresh metal. I've put some pictures in the 'show my car section' which I will add to, with time.

Damn and blast, my car does have twin servo's, and has been inactive for about 14 years (!) we think, so you are probably right about their condition.....

I'll investigate your suggested alternatives. Will the E12 525/528 servo run the twin-feed front caliper on the E3 - I essentailly need 6 outlets from the master cylinder - 2 for each front caliper and 1 for each rear caliper.....

Cheers,

Martin.

Nice car Martin. I sold my own 2500 a couple of months ago. It was just too nice and rare for me to use as my everyday hack. If I'd have modified it I'd have probably been crucified.

Right hand drive E3's (along with 2002's, E12's, E9 Coupes etc) use twin servos, one servo per circuit. This was done because the steering column prevented the standard servo being mounted on the bulkhead.
Later E12's from around 1977 (ish) used a long bracket that bolted to the bulkhead and moved the master cylinder and a conventional vacuum servo to an area just behind the O/S headlight.

The problem with the twin servo set up that it has not one, but three master cylinders, one on the bulkead activated by the pedal and another master cylinder per servo. The potential for brake failure is very high - indeed, on my 3.0S a servo failed so I diconnected it and let the remaining servo do the work - not ideal!

The later E12 set up would be cheapest, provided you can find one! The pedal box changed as well but you could rob it from the same car. The E12 5 Series is only a shortened E3 platform anyway and lots of bits are common. You could either use 528i vented front brakes (just the discs and calipers) or use the existing non ventilated 2500 brakes. What you do is link the two flexys from each caliper together using short steel pipes (or copper - much easier to use) into a standard 3 way connector - the type used on E30 rear brakes for example. Then run a single pipe from that connector into another 3 way connector which links both front brakes and then into the relevant master cylinder outlet. On the rear brakes the pipe from each caliper just goes into one at the 3 way connector (or 'T piece') and from there to a single pipe that runs from the back to the master cylinder.
I would also replace the main master cylinder. These fail as well, and the kiss of death is to pump-bleed the brakes. These were steel bodied cylinders, and the area beyound the standard operating area of the cylinder seals rusts due to water in the fluid. Pump bleed the brakes and the seals go into the rusty area and ruin them.
An E3 will certainly need a complete set of flexy hoses. On mine they were all internally collapsed leading to dragging brakes, and the clutch one was faulty as well.
If you need to remove the front struts, beware the three bolts that hold them to the lower platform that the suspension arm connects to. These just love to snap off so use the gas torch to get them red hot first - or put the car somewhere where it doesn't need to be moved whilst you get the broken bolts drilled out.

Not even started on the 35/40INAT carbs yet, or the voltage regulator.....

I recognise that beige E3. I recall it was restored and sold needing some engine work? They're a very good car to drive, better than the original E23 that replaced it.

The E3 is a lovely old car - I was once tempted by an 3.0 iL...but thought better of it as it would be an expensive job to do right - there are some specialists in Germany...would be interesting to find out from the DVLA how many were imported but how many still showing as registered

I've had a couple of BMW's in the past as company cars, but recently bought a 'project';

It was a bit rusty at the back end - worse than I first thought - but not as bad as some......

So now the car is in many, many, many bits......

Lots of bits off for powder coating and plating...

I'm enjoying the process, and benefit from having the use of a two-poster ramp at a workshop I rent with 2 mates, and have lots of help from my mates who are all surprisingly keen on the car.

There doesn't appear to be much of a following for the E3 - even on here I am struggling to find a section where it 'fits' and where I might find fellow owners.

So, the reason I bought one....  my Dad used to have one as his Police Traffic car back in the 1970's and was pictured in the BMW advert 'it takes on to catch one'. I have some original pictures from the photoshoot and of the car itself - which was an L registration. My Dad is the guy stood on the far side of the car.

I always loved the car, so now I have one - in lots of bits!

If anyone is interested I'll continue to post pictures of the restoration...?

Cheers,

Martin.

Update;

We've got on really well with the BMW. I do as much as I can, but I am blessed with very handy mates with a variety of skills, two are trained mechanics and one is a very, very good welder and another is ex-bodyshop. So, all of the work is undertaken 'in house' using a workshop I rent with my mates.

Rusted panels have been cut out and new repair panels have been bought or made to replace;

The inner arch lips were very rusty, so were cut out and fabricated replacements welded in, along with new double-skinned lips;

Welds were ground back and smoothed before a skim of filler was applied;

Body filler applied and flatted back on rear arches and rear quarter panels, etc;

Found some holes in the rear stut tops, on both sides, behind the back seat;

Cut out and welded repair sections;

Some of the panels have polished up really well - hopefully won't need a full repaint....

Seem sealer applied, getting ready for full prep of the underside, prior to underseal being allied - that'll be the next installement!

Hope you're enjoying reading this as much as I am enjoying doing it!

Cheers,

Martin.

im enjoying every minute of this!excellent to see a old bmw being retored,and whoever is welding needs a pint or two,it makes a change to see some good workmanship going into it instead of the patch over repairs which people claim to be "repaired"

im looking forward to seeing this car finished, as i feel it going to have a excellent standard!

Thanks Ian.

Yep, my pal the welder is a top bloke and you can be assured that I will keep him in beer for a very long time!

I think I have the right approach to this project;

1) If it is penerating rust, cut out and replace.
2) If it is surface rust grind back, treat and protect.
3) Items removed are being inpected, cleaned, painted and reused if possible or replaced, if damage or aged.
4) Suspension parts, etc have been blasted and powder coated.
5) All new bushes and bearings.
6) All nuts and bolts have been acid dipped and zinc plated.
7) Other parts have been prep'd and painted satin black.

I have spent a fair amount on parts, but this is no 'cheque book' restoration and I have struck deals for parts, bought usable second hand parts, scoured ebay and generally saved money where I can. Labour cost are vertually £0, as I am doing much of the work myself and many of my friends and contacts are providing help and support (as with the powder coating and zinc plating, etc).

The car will be to a very high standard, but I want it to be usable - that is why I am doing it after all!!!

More to follow.....

Cheers,

Martin.

Will it be ready for next October? Can you get a day of work?

Wednesday, 6th October 2010 is our National Trackday at Silverstone.
This was formerly called the CSL day as it was organised and run by the CSL section of the Club.

I have enlisted the help of John Castle and he is going to put on a static display of all the E3's he can lay his hands on - Some of them will take part in the on track action but I suspect most of them will just be for display.

John will also do one of his seminars and have an E3 Q+A session.

If you are into E3's, this is the place to be.

Nick. Thanks for the response - in fact thanks to everybody, it is very motivating to get some positive feedback and gives me a warm glow inside whilst I toil away in my very,very cold workshop!

In answer to your question, yes, it better bleeding be ready way before October! We are moving at quite a pace at the moment, but will have a break soon as another project (VW Golf Mk2 Racer) needs space on the ramp, so I will crack on with the engine.

I'm certainly up for displaying the car, although I generally use a VW Golf for trackdays....  Count me in, for sure!

Ian. I do console myself with the fact that although it is hard work and will take ages to complete, I did buy a 'good' car in terms of rust, and general condition. I appreciate that with a RR you have slightly more on your hands than I....  would love to see some pictures - If it is an early 2dr you have a very jelous fan right here!

Cheers,

Martin.

The reason I chose an E3 is because my (late) father drove one as his Police Traffic car in the '70's, and he/it was in a BMW advert - I loved the shape of the car.

His old car is long gone, but I may get the one I am restoring 'wrapped' in white vinyl and liveried like his Police car. The good thing about wrapping is that it comes off and you have your original colour underneath!

I look forward to the pictures, thanks Ian.

Cheers,

Mart.

I've been prepping the underside and arches ready for new underseal;

It has been back-breaking, dirty work, and i've hated every minute....  Holding an angle grinder with a wire-wheel attachment gets quite heavy! Still, it had to be done and I am glad I spent so much time on it. All the rust has been treated with rust remover, and then rust converter.

Now for the good bit - spraying on the new underseal!!!

Cheers,

Martin.

I did a load of research and decided in the end to use DINITROL for the cavity wax and underseal. It appears a great product and was easy to apply and has given a good finish.

I managed to blag a 150ltr compressor off a mate - the motor had failed and they had bought a new compressor rather than replacing the part. It was a 12 month old Draper and so we searched for a replacement motor. Draper wanted about £450 for a replacement (I think the compressor new is about £1200). In the end a small company that have an office and warehouse on the same farm as us, who specialise in wind generators and step-up phase converters came up with an exact replacement for £80!!!!  Bargain!

Based on the advise of DINITROL I bought there 'big car kit' and this included 4 'shutz' type cans of cavity wax and 6 cans of underseal, plus a gun and rust converter, etc. I lavishly applied the cavity wax - and still have a bit to do on the inside of the doors, bonnet and boot. I also whacked the underseal on - consentrating on getting a good think coat in all the edges, joints and lips, then building up coat after coat until I had used all the product and had a nice thick finish.

I think the results are pretty good, and I'm very pleased with the finish - I know that nobody is likely to see the underside of my car, but I am a perfectionist (as my mates keep telling me, frequently), so at least I know it is done to a good quality and standard!

Next job is to prep and paint the front struts, springs, etc, ready for assembling the new bilstien suspension units and getting the bloody thing screwed together and rolling again so I can get it off the ramp and get on with some other jobs!

Cheers,

Martin.
