Although the timing chains last forever what about the guides? my M52 has covered 150k and is still quiet.

Leave it well alone! Mine's done nearly 300'000 - I changed the chain and tensioner slipper rail whilst the front timing cover was off (oil leak) but they were all in serviceable condition.
