Steering Rack Failure

   A few days ago 28/05/2025, My 2019 440i M M sport, had a power steering failure whilst driving on the M4. The message stated, Steering stability failure, drive at moderate speed and contact you service provider.
Two hours later at home, power was restored.
I had booked it in with Lovetts in Swindon, who fortunately fitted me in at short notice. Later that day they told me, it has an internal defect in the rack, it will have to have a new rack fitted. Total cost including labour vat etc, circa £5500. Fortunately I have BMW extended warranty, so the repair only cost me the £250 excess. Had I not had the warranty, I would have sourced a much more reasonably priced rack.

What is annoying is an early failure of the Servotronic rack. My car has only covered 23000 miles, full BMW dealer history, its not driven hard, it still has its original brakes and the tyres are less than 50% worn. 

I did register my displeasure with BMW GB. Has anyone else had such an early failure, or know of it happening to anyone else?
