Bought a 2016 2-series on Saturday.  Downloaded the "My BMW" app.  Found I had to pay £69 to make it work. But it doesn't seem to do anything!  I'd sold my 2016 Jaguar XE the week before.  The Jaguar app didn't cost me anything, but I could lock and open the doors, start the aircon or heating, check my recent journeys, see how much petrol I had left.
Am I missing something?

You don't need to pay anything for the basic service - the premium price is for the live traffic data / POI stuff.

However, the older cars with 3g modems are getting less functionality now, as the 3g service is deprecated. You can pay but you won't get any additional services...and you can't do over-the-air updates for navigation as that has to be by USB (either directly at the dealer or via a VERY slow download process).

All I can do on mine is flash lights, unlock/lock, ventilate, check location and look at (incorrect) fuel level...

More info on the discontinuation (or 'sunset' as BMW calls it) can be found on BMW's website.

Instead of trying a 3rd party solution to add functionality back in, I decided to retrofit the later professional nav/hifi so that I could use Apple CarPlay for Waze, streaming audio, messages, voice control, etc.

Yes I've found out the hard way that my £69 is effectively wasted. I am awaiting "managements" approval for a refund.

It involves replacing the original system that came with the car with a later version from the LCI cars that optioned the Professional Navigation kit.

Depending on what's already fitted it can be a simple plug & play conversion for the screen - but in your case the nav/computer will need to be replaced and coded to your car to give you full Apple Carplay support.

It's not cheap (over £1000+ fitting for the ID5/ID6 system plus screen) - and there are aftermarket Android systems or MMI boxes which seem popular too.

This is the sort of add-on box available (but never used one myself, and there are any number of sources for similar items)...

There's more info on the options on model-specific forums (F30Post, 2Addicts, etc.) - but the cars of the same timeframe used the same systems anyway. I got my info from https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/index.php?

I was doing a full digital dash upgrade to match my previous vehicle, so wanted it all OE, and had a guy in Aylesbury fit/code it all for me (about £2k for the screen/computer/6WB dash).
