I'll certainly be looking at re blacking the leather after your great results.

Hi Andy,

As Neil says, you might like to try furniture or shoe polish on you seats first - that might work a treat and save you time and money doing the re-colouring that I've endured.

Good luck!

Mart.

Hi Atul.

They look great!

Can't wait to recieve them and get them on the car.

The fuel sticker is slightly different to the one on my car - I guess there are variences dependant on year, etc? This is the one on my car;

It doesn't make much difference to be honest.

I'm a bit behind with this, to be honest, and need to make some progress this week - the sunny days are making me feel guilty that I haven't finished it yet!

Cheers,

Mart.

hi mart,
the fuel sticker you have is an unusual one, i have not seen one on an e30 before.  the one i am sending you is the same as found on my 1990 325i sport and has been seen on other earlier 325i cars.  i wonder if it is a later sticker as it is gunning for 95 ron instead of min 91, could your car have needed a conversion to run on unleaded?  the correct placement of this sticker should also bee in the fuel filler flap so you dont forget when filling up instead of the engine bay.  you will see a small recess on the inside of the flap which is this stickers home.  i think yours has been stuck on later.

the asbestos sticker i am sending you is also smaller that the one you have.  again, i think yours might be a replacement as i have only seen the bigger ones on a 6 series and never on an e30.

hope that helps

;)

Sorry for the delay in updating the thread - I have been busy, honest!

The good news is that the seats are finished and look really great;

The carpet was pretty shabby - even after a jet-wash. The heater matrix had leaked into the passenger footwell and it had dyed the carpet blue. So, the only option was to dye the carpet;

I even managed to employ my wife to help out spraying the carpet;

The first coat went ok, but we soon ran out.... So, with more paint purchased the second coat covered really well and I'm pleased with the result - I've ordered some carpet matts too, so most of the original carpet will be covered.

I've also been working on the door cards and deck lid, re-colouring then the same as the seats - for the best results, its all in the prep....

Masking the deck lid - it is part painted and has some black plastic covers that I couldn't remove;

Seat backs;

Door cards;

Used the same process as the seats - acetone on a green scourer to remover all the crap. Then, the first coating applied is an adhesion enhancer - like a kind of etch primer, I guess. Then it is applying the colour, lacquer, etc. It took bloody ages and I kept running out of gas....

The door card had a split in the top corner, on the leading edge of the door - very noticeable and a common issue when E30 door cards have been removed/refitted several times. I reinforced the corner with some two-pack epoxy filler and some gauze, then filled the facing side with the leather filler - neat job and should last;

More pics of the completed panels to follow......

I've also been finishing the door glass and trims - very time consuming.

I've replaced the flexible brake lines with stainless braided - I have no idea how long the rubber ones have been on for and the could be minging inside. Plus, I wasn't happy with the huge gap between the arches and the tyre - the car didn't have Mtech suspension, so it has been slightly lowered and I think looks better.

Carpet is now in and the sill trim and speaker covers, etc. Old seat is in so I can move the car to my house and fit the interior......

The big finish at the weekend, just in time for the nice weather to end.....

Right, we're on the final lap now.....

I decided to bring the intrior back over to the workshop as I had two clear days when nobady else would be about to get in my way!

Rear deck lid on - new seal purchased from BMW to stop a small leak into the hood stoage area;

Trims and chrome reattached;

Rear quarter cards on;

Rear seats in;

Front door next - Checked the operation of the re-installed electric windows and lubed up the mechanisms and runners;

Moisture barrier;

Door card on - the door bins are discoloured and there is not much I can do about that really, so on the look out for some better replacements;

And, repeat;

Going retro with the sound system and have obtained a period Blaupunkt Bremen, which is being updated to accept an Ipod input;

I'd removed the glovebox back in September when the heater matrix decided it wanted to dump the coolant in the front passenger footwell - what a bugger of a job that is to do on an E30! - anyway, I had no idea how the glovebox and fitting, etc went back in and actually had to consult a manual..... success! Plus, centre console, gaitors, ashtrays, lighter, etc;

Front seats in;

Job done!

And very good it looks too....

The car was finished, but was very, very dusty;

So off it went to the Valeter at the end of the lane for a proper clean, polish, etc. Took it home and presented it to my wife - she loves it, I quite like it too;

That was Saturday night, so we went off for a drive and did about 50 miles. Car feels great, no problems, very happy! Sunday and Monday it rained - just my luck! Julie used the car on Tuesday - all going well. Then I clean the car again yesterday and take it to the local MoT shop to get the headlights adjusted, then popped into the workshop for an hour to see progress on Carl's (StumpyRS4) cage in the Audi.

I didn't make it home.....

Looks great Mart, but what happened?

WRT to the door pockets, if you take a sample of the leather to a paint shop they could mix some paint for you to spray on to match the rest of the interior. May be easier than sourcing good ones that haven't faded

Hi,

Yep, that might work, I did think about that too - but how durable would it be? I have a pair of spare bins so I might get the Painter near our workshop to have a look...

And, what happened?

Well, it dumped its oil - all of it!

Literally pumped it out somewhere around the filter housing - not really had time to look at it yet. I think I caught it in time.... hopefully!

Strange thing is there has not been a drop of oil for the 70 or so miles I have done in the last few days then this....

Oh well, we'll get it sorted.

Cheers,

Mart.

Yes, it does spoil it and I have bought a smaller stainless steal backbox with straight, slash cut twin pipes - but, the connector pipes were too large for the existing system so I have sent them back to be changed. That nasty backbox will be changed as soon as possible!

Cheers,

Martin.

A fabulous job Mart, you should feel very proud and deservedly so. The car looks great, I hope the oil issue is a simple fix, nothing I've ever experienced so no help there I'm sorry to say.

Thanks, I'm pretty pleased with it and a couple of minor things to finish.

I hope the oil leak is minor too and that it hasn;t run the bearings dry.... fingers crossed.

Hi.

Yes, as the engine was cold and I turn off as soon as I knew there was a problem, the engine has been saved any damage.

It turned out that I had fitted the wrong seal to the bolt that goes through the oil filter housing into the engine block - so I got all new seals from BMW and a new filter and changed them - so all good now. A silly mistake on my part, but no harm done.

I've fitted a new exhaust back box - an after market stainless steel 'box - and it is much neater and more subtle to look at, but boy-o-boy it is bloody noisy!! Too noisy, so noisy I can't live with it!

Anybody know where I can get a subtle back box that is not going to make my ears bleed?

Also, where can I get my hood realigned? It is leaking slightly onto the front seats - where the top of the door meets the screen and the hood - think it needs adjusting, but I don't want to fiddle myself....

Cheers,

Mart.

Try massaging some vasaline or silicone grease into the hood front rubber seal,the theory is that it softens the rubber,allowing it to expand into the gap.

GummiPfledge (Ebay) is very good at bounching seals back and may cure this, if infact it is not alignment.

Backbox, a custom one may be better, but maybe a standard box with a modified tail pipe may suit you better. Cut the existing pipe off and replace with a nice stainless steel pipe. Will look good and retain the standard noise level.

Ok guys, so we've enjoyed this car for a year and done about 2,000 miles, with no issue. It's just come out of the garage after spending most of the winter tucked up - we had another car to use so it seemed silly to use it if not really needed.

Time moves on and whilst I love the car, my wife - who is the main driver of it - doesn't like it so much. So, its up for sale!

I would prefer it to go to a car club member who understands the work that has gone into it and therefore the value of the car and indeed can look past the 295,000 miles on the clock.

Looking for offers in excess of £4,000 - which I think is worth it for a car in this exceptional condition. Please do not hesitate to PM or call if you want to discuss the car or arrange to view it.

Cheers,

Martin

Hi Martin

I have just read this through for the first time, a lovely job, very impressive, I did laugh half way through as I remembered you said a 'light' restoration in the first post.

Good luck with the sale.

<short term solution> It's a bit of a pain, but if you right click on a photo, then click open in a new tab, it links to the Photobucket website and the unwatermarked photos
