If you have the opportunity to visit France and are interested in places and things that are icons of the second world war then I would recommend a visit to Oradour-sur-Glane. Located just north west of Limoges it is a little known town with a lot to tell. The town has been frozen in time since the end of the war and is now a memorial to all of those who lost their lives. There is a memorial, a museum, and the town itself to stroll around and witness the results of the mindless destruction of the SS forces. It is a moving and vivid experience and well worth an excursion to visit. We visited and stayed at the Logis hotel in nearby St Junien (Le Relais de Comodoliac) which was very good (restaurant a little expensive but excellent quality) if you need somewhere to stay. Go Travel !. |

To find Oradour, exit the A20 Autoroute at Sortie 28 towards Angouleme - Oradour is well signposted, with plenty of parking space. There is another village to the south of the Dordogne which was also wiped out by 2nd SS Panzer regiment on their way to repel the Normandy invasion, but unlike Oradour, it was rebuilt.
There are lots of interesting things left over from WW2 all over Europe - have a look at my article 'Places of Interest in Europe' in the 'Foeign Touring' forum area. Edited by Mike Fishwick - 06 Oct 2014 at 11:16am |

Having visited the place I did find it very eerie with everything left as it was.
Unfortunately time has taken its toll on many of the metal artefacts left out to the elements but there are still the main remnants of cars and the likes of sowing machines lying exactly where they were after the atrocity.

Pity they cannot put a roof over the entire site, as it will inevitably deteriorate away.

I visited Oradour back in the 1970's as a nipper on holiday with the folks although I don't recall much of it. Normandy was/is a great place with all the old Pillboxes, and the U Boat pens at La Rochelle/St Nazaire are worth visiting.
A small coastal town on the North German coast not far from Kiel has an original WW2 U boat moored up as well, the U995. I've been on that twice and the Naval/Kreigsmarine memorial is fascinating. |
