    Posted: 22 Mar 2009 at 11:38am
Took my E21 320 Baur out of the garage yesterday only to find I could no longer select reverse gear!

Its the first time she's been out in a while, but couldn't go for a long run as its not currently taxed.

Other gears felt ok, but it just would't get reverse.

Can anyone point me in the right direction with this?  Clutch or gearbox?

Front brakes seem to be binding as well.

Think I've got a bit of work to do to get her on the road for the summer.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

with regards the reverse gear,if you can select all other gears,i dont think it will be a clutch issue,im presuming it hasnt leaked any oil and the box still has oil in it,
if so have you tried to select reverse with the engine off, then try starting it with the clutch down?when you tried to select the gear did it grind in or did it feel like you were forcing the linkage?
this may also sound daft but are you sure nothing is restricting the gear stick movment?

Hi - what box is in the car (guess its not a dogleg) and was it left in gear when stored, from mention of clutch I assume its a manual..the brakes may free off when driven - but also another guess you may have a list of other jobs

Thanks for the replies.

The car was left in neutral with the handbrake off over the winter.  The gearbox has not leaked oil all over the garage and there is nothing obstructing the gearstick. It does feel like the linkage is being forced and will not engage reverse at all, running or not, hot or cold.

Need to get her back on the road ASAP and enjoy the sunshine.
Looks like it may be a job for my local mechanic.

Ideally eould need to get it on a lift and check linkage to make sure nothing bent or broken etc before you start

Not sorted as yet, but its now taxed and insured so at least I can use it.  Just means I have to be very carefull where I park!

My friendly mechanic is now back from Le Mans so will be looking into the problem shortly.  Hope to have everything sorted ready for the Silverstone Classic at the end of July.

Does your car still have the race livery? Did you fit that?
