I have a 2003 E39 530i sport auto which has done 42500 miles. I have been having a problem with a message onthe onboard computor display when first switching on which says "Transmission failsafe program" Twice the car only moves slowly but if I switch off and on again the message disappears and the car drives normally, anybody have any ideas

My first recommendation would be to check battery condition/voltage first.
Possible if original battery still fitted that not maintaining the 12v plus needed to stop all the messages appearing on BMW screens.
I know the gearbox will not work if less than 12v so defaults to warning message.
You should have more than 12v without the engine running; 14.4v with the engine running
Drive a BMW and you will have a smile on your face every time (and- drive twice as far as you need to !!)

Agree with Bern - check battery condition and charge first so also checking the Alternator - if fault try to recondition rather than replace if want to keep money in your wallet
