Your picutre shows a new caliper with a plated finish, which can only be retained by the don't-use-it brigade!

I have always used Finnigans Red Oxide primer, followed by silver Smootherite:

This lasts for years, particularly if you file opff any sharp edges, and is easy to clean.

The picture was from a restoration thread, it was a very well rusted and badly brake dust stained calliper that was restored.

Those calipers look great Mike!

You cannot believe a lot of restoration articles - they just buy an exchange caliper!

The picture was taken a few years ago, but after an annual clean with a sponge and car shampoos the Red Zed still looks the same.

Paint is far better than any amount of re-plating or blasting, neither of which last very long, particularly in the UK, where salt is a constant problem - it dries out in the 'summer' and blows around, then dissolves again when it rains, and the process starts again.

Another favourite is to spend money having all black parts shot blasted and powder coated, which does make them lok like new - for a year of so!

For large items such as brake shields, prime them, rub them down with 600 paper, and spray several coats of Smootherite from an aerosol.  I did this tothe rear frame of my BMW motorcycle about 20 years ago, and it still brings comments about how good BMW's stove enamelling is!

Mike i was thinking of powder coating all the suspension parts on my M3, after reading your comments about what you did to your car and seeing the photo of yours, i,m now considering doing the same. Would etch primer and hammerite smooth obtain the same finish as you achieved. Also did you strip the calipers off the car or not ? And did you remove other parts or do them on the car ? Thanks DAVE.

I've seen shot-blasted calipers come up like new before but don't think it's guaranteed to do that. If you have the shot blasted then painted in  that bronze colour paint shouldn't be too far off!

I spotted a pair of front callipers that looked in excellent condition on ebay. Needless to say it didn't take long for them to be on my work bench. Thoughts of stripping them down and replacing all rubber seals, pistons and bleed screws soon went out of the window as they simply didn't need doing.
My method for calliper painting is as follows...
After soaking them in degreaser for 24 hours - I've pinched a bolt into the banjo thread to seal the insides during this whole process...
Apply Nitromors to what's left of the paint…
Use the industrial parts washer…
Soak in Bilt Hamber Deox-C rust killer for 24 hours…
Great results from the Deox-C…
I'm using american VHT paint for this project - fantastic stuff.  After cleaning with alcohol the callipers get three coats of VHT Gold calliper paint (mist coat, another mist coat followed by a wet coat). Next I applied a couple of coats of VHT calliper clear to add a little more gloss and protection…
After a few days to air dry, cure paint in low bake oven at 90 degrees for an hour as per the VHT instructions…
The finished result…
